BRINGING SUMMER NEWS FROM THE FARM
Shearing day one at Future Vintage 🐑

One of the biggest jobs of the year and somehow one of our favourites too. With lots of helping hands at the farm, the sheep were shorn, the fleeces were sorted and the field was slowly filled with bags of wool in every shade imaginable. And this is only half of our flock! We started this process with half our flock at end of May.

Every fleece is sorted by hand into its natural shades ready to be spun into yarn. One of the nicest parts of the day is seeing all the different colours piled up together after months out in the fields.

Every Future Vintage jumper starts here first with the flock, raw wool and busy hands. We can’t wait to see what our V26/27 comes out like!

It’s a steady kind of work, looking after sheep.

You’re out in all weathers, often at the same times each day, whether it’s convenient or not. Some days pass quietly, others need your full attention.

You learn to read the field without thinking too much about it. A small shift in the flock, one held back, something just slightly off.

It becomes second nature over time.

That’s the part that sits behind everything we make.

On days like this, it feels like we live in the Mediterranean. Not complaining 😂

As soon as a lamb is born, the ewe licks her lamb clean. It is more than care, it is recognition. This first touch helps her claim her lamb and build a bond through scent, so she knows exactly who belongs to her.

During birth, the umbilical cord naturally snaps and everything follows its own timing, exactly as it should.

Within 30 minutes, most lambs are already on their feet and looking to feed for the very first time. On the second side you can see a particularly keen lamb already settled and feeding without much hesitation.

This is where everything begins for us, long before anything becomes yarn or a garment. We feel very lucky to witness it each year.

This is our linker. Either loved or hated! Vicious with its needles and a mind of its own....however, an essential piece of kit in the woolery.

It is the part of the making process that brings everything together, joining each panel stitch by stitch into a finished piece.

It was made by the brilliant Jerry Douglas whilst he was working as an apprentice in a border mill in 1972 Lindsay thinks. Jerry sources and renovates Dubieds, and looks after all our machines in the woolery, so an essential part of our story.

Not quite what a floor loom was designed for… but after washing, every Future Vintage piece ends up drying on it.

It turns out it makes a very good drying rack.

One of the final steps before each piece is properly finished.

Looking after the sheep is the part that sits behind everything.

It’s daily work. Checking them through the winter, watching them closely at lambing, knowing each one well enough to notice when something isn’t quite right.

There’s a responsibility that comes with keeping a flock like this. You learn to pay attention, to work with the seasons, and to put their needs first.

The wool comes later.
The beautiful Rosie, Lindsay's first pet, a blackface, utterly loved, sadly passed away this year. We will miss her. A wonderful girl.
