Hello EH Community!

How are you all doing?

2020 has been a year of unprecedented change. At EH, we acknowledge that for many people - the year has been very challenging.

We are delighted to announce an exciting collaboration with the brilliant and wonderfully talented Accredited Mindfulness Teacher - Rachel Ashcroft.

We will be running 2 free 40-minute LIVE mindfulness sessions via Zoom - all survivors and supporters are welcome to join us. In these sessions, you will;

- Be able to define what mindfulness is
- Receive an overview of wellbeing
- Enjoy taking part in a variety of different types of mindfulness practices

We acknowledge the importance of mindfulness practice and the benefits that this can bring to people’s lives in a considered and trauma-informed way. We wanted to round-off 2020 by taking some time to pay full attention to the moment.

If you wish to join us, please DM us directly and we will share dial-in details with you. For security reasons, we ask that you DO NOT forward these details on.

We look forward to seeing you for our first session in January.

16 days of action against domestic abuse – Same s*x domestic abuse myths🤯

There are a number of reasons that same s*x domestic abuse survivors do not get the help they need, which unfortunately could come from varying angles.

One of those problems are myths that surround same s*x relationships and the dynamics suggested from external parties. These myths only serve to minimise the experience of LGBT survivors, which in itself causes barriers between the survivor and the service they need. These misconceptions make it difficult for others to understand the real issues affecting LGBT victims and may stop some agencies taking the issue of same-s*x partnership violence seriously.

Some of the more common stereotypes and myths suggest that:

- Abuse doesn’t happen in same-s*x relationships
- Abuse in same-s*x relationships is not as serious as heteros*xual abuse
- Abuse in same-s*x relationships is ‘mutual’
- Abuse is about size and strength: for example, a gay male victim will be smaller and more effeminate and abusive le***an will be more masculine
- Women cannot perpetrate violence
- Gay men can more easily protect themselves.
- Sexual abuse doesn’t happen in same-s*x relationships; a woman cannot r**e another woman and men cannot be r**ed
- Same-s*x partners are more able to leave their abusers because, they are not married or don’t have children
- Same-s*x partners are as bad as each other and both a victim and a perpetrator

Perpetuating the above myths not only causes further harm, it also causes distrust from same s*x survivors meaning they may not access the services they require.

Let’s educate ourselves and others to understand and release these myths. Share this post to share the knowledge🦋

📢16 days of action against domestic abuse📢

There are many parallels between LGBT+ people’s experiences of domestic abuse and that of heteros*xual cisgender peers. This includes the impact on the survivors and a range of violent behaviours which may include psychological, physical, s*xual, financial and emotional abuse, forced marriage and so-called ‘honour’-based violence.
However, in addition LGBT+ people may also have their s*xuality and gender identity used against them as a tactic by the perpetrator to keep power and control in the relationship.

Even though LGBT+ victims and survivors are less visible to services, evidence suggests the abuse they experience is often particularly severe. The prevalence rates for all types of abuse were higher for LGBT+ survivors, particularly s*xual abuse – 28% of LGBT+ survivors had experienced s*xual abuse at the time of accessing support, compared to 21% of those who did not identify as LGBT+.

16 days of action against domestic abuse📢

This year we will be taking part in ‘16 days of action against Domestic Abuse’, which is a national campaign aimed at businesses to support them taking action against domestic abuse and violence. The campaign lasts 16 days from 25th Nov until 13 December, with a different theme every day to explore the various forms of domestic violence.

This year we will be participating in ‘Beyond Recognition’ campaign. LGBT+ domestic abuse🏳️‍🌈, can sometimes be lost and we wanted to bring recognition to the issue within the LGBT+ community.

So please follow the campaign, engage with us and share posts, you never know who you’ll be helping in the simplest of ways. Join us in improving the recognition of LGBT+ experiences, going beyond recognition and create positive social change🦋
