I'm almost nervous to type the word... Christmas.

There, I've said it.

We're not ready to launch Christmas workshops yet, but we are starting to plan them. Every year we sit down with notebooks, samples, half-finished ideas and far too many possibilities.
The difficult bit isn't thinking of ideas. It's choosing which ones make it onto the programme.

So I'm curious...

We’re looking to run a workshop exclusively for left handers, so if you’ve ever been told you can’t knit because you’re left handed, or have tried and failed, comment or DM and we’ll be in touch.

Exact logistics haven’t been figured out yet - location, time etc. We want to fit everyone in! Details will depend on responses.

One of the reasons I enjoy teaching is that I also like being taught. Sofia has recently come back from Craft Camp where she learned willow basket weaving, and she's been telling me all about it. I suspect we're all going to hear quite a lot more over the next few months!

I think it's good for us to remember what it feels like to be the beginner. To ask questions, get things wrong, start again and gradually work it out.

We ask our students to do that all the time. It's only fair that we do it too.

I was looking round the studio the other day and realised there aren't many blankets on laps at the moment. Lots of socks. Lots of silk and linen. Lots of smaller projects. Hardly surprising really, when it's thirty degrees outside.

One of the things we've noticed over the years is that people often think they've "stopped making" over the summer. Most of the time they haven't. They've just changed projects. And that's absolutely fine.

I'd much rather see someone doing ten happy minutes than feeling guilty because they haven't worked on the cardigan they started in February.

So, what's on your needles or hook at the moment?

We've heard quite a few people say recently, "I haven't done much knitting this summer." Then we have a chat, and it turns out they have. They've knitted a sock instead of a jumper. They've taken a granny square to the park. They've done a few rows while waiting for the pasta to cook instead of sitting down for an evening.
It just looks different.

I think we can be a bit hard on ourselves sometimes. We imagine making has to look the same all year, but July and August are never quite like that. Life gets busier, it's too hot for a lap full of wool, people go away, routines disappear. Your knitting doesn't have to disappear with them.

What are you making at the moment?

Social media makes halfway through the year look like you're supposed to measure success. We're measuring ours in rescue...

Social media makes halfway through the year look like you're supposed to measure success. We're measuring ours in rescued projects, cups of coffee and people who can now read their knitting without panicking.

Feels like a much better way of doing it. đź‘Ť

Halfway through the year we've taught hundreds of hours, untangled an alarming amount of yarn, drunk an unreasonable amount of coffee and met some wonderful new makers.

You don't have to stop making because it's July. Sometimes summer is for smaller projects.
