Today was a full and rewarding day spent supporting a lovely mother with two young daughters who had reached the point of feeling completely overwhelmed by her home. Like so many people in this situation, she had done her very best to cope by placing items into plastic storage boxes when she could not immediately find a home for them. Although this had helped in the short term, the boxes had gradually become another source of stress because they represented lots of unfinished decisions.
My priority was to improve the flow of the house so that it felt calmer and worked better for everyday family life. The hallway was the main focus, where unnecessary items had accumulated and interrupted the natural movement through the home. We found a more practical home for the everyday pram while it was not in use, creating a much clearer entrance and making the space feel immediately more welcoming.
Throughout the day we worked steadily through each area, making thoughtful decisions rather than rushing. Every item was given a logical home, ensuring it could be found easily and, just as importantly, put away again without effort. It was not simply about tidying, it was about creating systems that would continue to support her long after I had left.
In the kitchen we emptied cupboards, checked that food and medicines were all within date, responsibly disposed of anything that had expired, and made far better use of the available storage by introducing practical solutions and making the most of every cupboard. Small changes, such as adding hooks and rethinking how everyday items were stored, made a significant difference to how the space functioned.
By the end of the day there was a car boot full of donations, mainly baby items, together with a small amount of rubbish. More importantly, the house felt lighter, calmer and much easier to manage. My client left the day feeling relieved rather than overwhelmed, with the confidence that everything now had a proper home and that the systems we had created would make family life that little bit easier going forward.
