We went back and forth on whether a playroom actually needs a proper sofa, or whether a bean bag does the same job for less.

They solve different problems. A modular cube sofa holds its shape and separates into pieces a child can rearrange; a bean bag cannot do that. Neither is the wrong choice, it depends what the room needs.
