My grandfather was a great man. The best. Growing up, he had the most amazing pick up truck - time has taken its toll on it, but I remember it being the prettiest thing growing up.

I fashioned our pick up truck nursery print after my grandfather’s car. Everything I do here is with purpose, tied to a specific memory from my childhood, from my family, to yours.

May you belong.

The last of the summer days, and I’m finding myself longing for a bit of a change.

Our collegiate burgundy botanical photo mount sure will come into its own over the autumn and winter. I can’t wait to style it for the new season ahead!

These early years of raising children can feel so conflicting. Trying to build something out of nothing, whilst also being a present mother that’s curating memories, keeping traditions and making a happy childhood for your little ones.

I hope I’m getting the balance right; most times I worry I may not be.

In the moments I’m scale to catch my breath, I remember to curate and frame the little things that mean something to us, and remind us of who we are, and what we stand and hope for.

I genuinely couldn’t believe what I spotted while watching Maurice this weekend.

Just shy of two hours into the 1987 Merchant Ivory film, there they were: patterned photo mounts, sitting quite happily in the country home of an Edwardian gentleman.

I actually paused the film, jumped up and took far too many photos of the screen.

I’ve always rather thought of patterned photo mounts as our own little discovery. So finding them, quite by accident, in an Edwardian country house was a wonderful surprise, and somehow very reassuring.

Perhaps the best designs are like that. They don’t really belong to one particular moment. They simply keep finding their way back.

Apparently, patterned photo mounts have been doing just that for rather longer than we realised - at least for a 100 years!

Introducing The Almanac - a new monthly edit from Coeur et Maman.

Inspired by the old-fashioned almanacs that gathered together the rhythms, observations and pleasures of the seasons, ours is a little collection of things to eat, drink, read, listen to, make and gather around, alongside ideas for creating and keeping family memories along the way.

Our first edition is The High Summer Almanac.

EAT

Pear, Brie & Prosciutto Crostini. Sweet pear, creamy Brie and salty prosciutto on crisp crostini. An easy little bite for long summer lunches, impromptu gatherings or an evening in the garden. The sort of recipe that feels a little special without requiring too much from the cook.

DRINK

A lavender iced latte. Floral, fragrant and served over ice. A gentle nod to the lavender blooming through the garden and the slower pace of summer afternoons. One to make when there’s nowhere else you need to be.

DECORATE

Keepsake decor. We’ve always believed that the loveliest homes are filled with things that mean something. Summer is a particularly good time to bring out the pieces that hold memories: photographs, inherited treasures, children’s artwork and objects collected along the way, and let them become part of the rooms we live in.

GATHER

An alfresco dinner or a picnic with the family. There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about eating outside in summer: a table in the garden, a blanket on the grass, food shared from the middle and children disappearing between courses. Nothing elaborate required.

READ

Two books to dip into slowly: The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, with its beautiful observations of the natural world throughout the year, and Brambly Hedge: Summer Story; a childhood favourite that feels particularly fitting when the days are long and the garden is at its fullest.

A SEASONAL COLLECTION

Botanical kitchen art. Bringing the garden indoors doesn’t have to mean grand arrangements. A seasonal botanical, a pressed flower or a few gathered stems can become something to display, turning the fleeting beauty of summer into something that lasts a little longer.

IN THE GARDEN

Press a flower from this season. There is something lovely about preserving a tiny piece of summer before it passes; a flower picked from the garden, pressed between pages and kept to rediscover later.

LISTEN

Our High Summer playlist is made for golden evenings and open windows: Our House by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy; Come Away With Me by Norah Jones; Bloom by The Paper Kites; and Harvest Moon by Neil Young.

A little nostalgic, a little dreamy, and very much for summer.

A MEMORY WORTH KEEPING

An annual family portrait.

Not necessarily a formal photograph or a perfectly coordinated moment; simply a record of your family as you are this year. The faces, the height differences, the favourite clothes, the slightly chaotic reality of family life. Because these are the details that become precious with time.

And perhaps that is what we love most about summer: how ordinary moments can become the ones we remember most vividly.

Welcome to The Almanac.

A monthly collection of seasonal inspiration and simple pleasures; with a few things worth keeping along the way.

My grandmother was a beautiful woman. Tall, graceful, collected. Everyone who knew her considered her wise, measured. She never uttered an unkind word, and she never reacted - always measured in her responses.

But that’s not what I remember the most about her. I remember the stories she told.

She went blind at some point when I was young, and because I was a quiet child who preferred to sit next to her than go play with my cousins, she once let slip that I’m called the “red haired” when she thought I was not there.

The stories she enjoyed retelling the most were about my life in Cape Town. All of it made up, all of it highly improbable. As you can see from the third picture, all of it highly entertaining. No matter how much I protested the stories, they remained. My family encouraged them.

My grandmother never got to share in my life outside of her own. She raised me from when I was an infant and mom had to go back to work and teaching school. I went on to go to catholic boarding school, university and then eventually settled in Cape Town. She could not have imagined the life I led. And yet, she told the stories anyway.

I think back on those stories, those years when her memory slipped and the stories were as entrenched as reality, and I realise they were a way of maintaining connection to a child she raised, a child named after her.

My grandmother was a graceful woman. She was a beautiful woman, and I’m honoured to have the legacy to continue her name. A name as unique and as beguiling as she was.

This is why I care about family, the connections we make, the traditions we uphold, the moments we celebrate, big and small. We may not know it in the moment, living through it, but we forge our identities and legacies in the everyday life we lead. And if we’re lucky, those gone before us would have handed over a glowing baton that’s a snug hug on days things feel uncertain.

To love is to risk heartbreak. And the lucky ones have their hearts broken over and over again.

It is bittersweet to have something from past generations to hold onto, and treasure. For me, that something is my grandmother’s recipe for citron melon pudding. A childhood favourite that’s the background to so many core memories.

I wanted to create a photo mount that honoured that memory, whilst also inviting you to honour yours.

This one is meant specifically for the kitchen. To frame recipes handed to you, or new family recipes that are firm favourites.

Let them take pride of place in the heart of your home.

On a recent trip to Wales with my son, we decided to visit the local park for fresh air and a bit of scenery. Roath Park was truly stunning, with its myriads of birds and plant life, and watched as my son tried to name each of them.

It had me wondering why the mallard duck is so popular in art, what its cultural and societal significance is. I’ve not been able to find any conclusive assessment.

If you know, I’d love it if you shared.
