Jura is believed to be Norse for “Island of the Deer,” a nod to the 6,000 deer that roam the 30-mile-long Scottish isle, which writer George Orwell once called home. While Jura receives more attention for its single malt whisky distillery than its pebble and quartz rock-strewn shores, the raised, ridged beaches along the uninhabited western coast are some of the most awe-inspiring in northern Europe. And with a population of merely 200, you won’t have to worry about sharing with anyone else—except the red deer, of course. (Visit a wild and beautiful Scottish island owned by its residents.)
