Charlie Allen Bespoke Makers of the Finest Bespoke clothing in the world. Charlie Allen is a London-born designer and third generation fully-trained tailor.

He went to the Chelsea School of Art, followed by two years studying menswear at the Royal College of Art. His first collection sold internationally and won the International Linen Designer of the Year award and was head of menswear at the RCA from 1994 to 1997. Having established himself as a leading UK bespoke tailor, he opened the Charlie Allen Menswear Company in Islington in 1992, his client

base has grown through word of mouth and coverage in GQ, Arena, FHM, LíUomo Vogue and many other publications. As a designer Charlie has worked with Austin Reed, BG, Katherine Hamnett, George Davies Partnership, BHS, John Lewis, Takaoka, Umbro, George, and many others.

In The Softly Softly Approach, the Financial Times looked at a shift taking place in British tailoring: less weight, softer construction, and a different idea of how a jacket should feel.

Charlie Allen put the hesitation at the time simply:

“They assume a much lighter jacket won’t look right.”

Nearly 20 years later, lightness, ease and softer structure have become part of the language of modern tailoring.

The idea was never simply to take structure away. It was to use less weight without losing shape, balance or presence.

Interesting to look back at a conversation from 2007 and see how much has changed, and how relevant the question still feels.
