George Cleverley & Co. Ltd

George Cleverley & Co. Ltd Bespoke London Shoemaker For over 50 years G.J.Cleverley & Co is where you will find the best of bespoke English shoemaking and craftsmanship.

Situated in the beautiful 19th century Royal Arcade just off Old Bond Street, Cleverley is at the heart of London’s West End. George Cleverley was born on the 10th of August 1898 into a shoemaking family in London. George moved to Colchester in Essex with his parents when he was aged two and spent his childhood selling bootlaces & polish. After finishing his apprenticeship at 15, he was called up

to the Army for World War I and stationed in London before joining an army boot factory in Calais, France. After the war he joined Tuczec, a high society London shoemaker on Clifford Street, Mayfair. He remained there for 38 years. George left Tuczec in 1958 to start up his own business. G.J.Cleverley of Cork Street, Mayfair, London. On Cork Street he furthered his reputation to include some of the most illustrious names in society and became known for making the Cleverley shape - a graceful, chisel-toed shoe which became signature to his extraordinary craft. George died in 1991 at nearly 93 years of age and was still working, virtually, until he died. In 1978 George Cleverley decided that John Carnera and George Glasgow seemed to share his same high principles of shoemaking as he understood, and they became in essence his pupils and eventually his successors. Between them, George and John have a shared experience of 90 years in the Bespoke world. All the Cleverley staff of shoe makers go through a 3 to 5 year apprenticeship to ensure the style and quality is consistently maintained.

Some of the best things we make begin with a conversation. A client needed something that didn’t exist. A proper cigar case that could hold everything in one place, ci**rs, cutter, lighter, phone, without the bulk of a bag or the fuss of emptying pockets. Something discreet, something considered, something built to the same standard as his shoes. The ‘Karlin’ is the result. Contrasting crocodile leathers inside and out, a single large compartment for ci**rs alongside three smaller compartments for the essentials, and a slim exterior handle for carrying between the table and the terrace. Nothing wasted. Everything where it should be.

This is what bespoke means to us. Not just made to measure, but made to solve. If you can describe it, we can build it.

Royal Ascot. One of the great traditions in the British calendar and one we look forward to every year. There are few occasions left that still demand you dress for the day. Morning dress, top hat, a pair of Cleverley oxfords. For several years now, George Cleverley has hosted Box in the Royal Enclosure, bringing together friends and clients from around the world to celebrate the racing, the pageantry, and the kind of day that rewards doing things properly.

This year’s Ascot is just around the corner. We look forward to welcoming our guests once again.

Our founder’s signature. The George II in Tan llama and coffee suede. You can spot a pair of George Cleverley shoes at first glance. The “suspiciously square” toe became Mr. George Cleverley’s hallmark when he set up his Mayfair shop in 1958, and it remains unmistakable to this day. Named for the man himself, this dual fabric combination pairs the softness of brown suede against the warmth of llama, set on leather soles that soften with wear. A shoe as comfortable at the weekend as it is during the working week.

We work with the finest tanneries in the world to source leathers and skins of exceptional quality and character. Porosus and Nile crocodile, alligator, ostrich, lizard — each sourced responsibly and finished to a standard that allows the natural beauty of every skin to speak for itself.

No two hides are alike, and that is entirely the point. The selection available at our Mayfair atelier and trunk shows is extensive, but it is not exhaustive. If a client has something specific in mind — a particular skin, colour, or finish — we are always happy to source it. The commission is yours. The possibilities should be too.

The Jefferson. Shown here in antique steel calf - a whole-cut oxford crafted from a single seamless piece of leather.

Whole-cut construction is among
the most challenging techniques in shoemaking. Without seams to hide imperfections, every element must be flawless: the leather selection, the pattern cutting, the lasting. There’s nowhere to hide, which is precisely the point.
