Ashley Watson is a London-based menswear designer engineering functional clothing for the road.

After seven years designing for a number of leading UK labels, he set out to produce a range of clothing on his own terms. Inspired by the freedom of being on two wheels, Ashley uses the knowledge gained riding year-round and in all weathers to guide his work. • When I was in Florence earlier this year, I went to see the Rothko exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi.

I’ve always liked abstract expressionism and Rothko’s paintings in particular. What struck me more than anything was a deep plum colour - used in a number of the works being show.

There was something about it. Every time I saw it, it stopped me. I don’t know why, and it’s hard to describe. There was something in that colour.

A few weeks later I was in the mountains in Turkey, having just visited a regenerative cotton farm. We pulled over and a red poppy on the roadside caught my eye.

I picked it, tucked it into my notebook, and didn’t think about it again. When I got home, the petals had dried to the exact colour of the Rothko paintings.

That was enough for me... I decided to make a run of the Wilks Overshirt in the same shade of plum.

Follow the south bank of the Arno past Florence’s old city wall, and you’ll come to Duccio Gambi’s studio. He works in a field that he calls research design - sitting somewhere between art, design and installation.

• It’s one of those in-between days, you’re heading out the door, and then the question… should I take a jumper?

This is what we designed the Arta Longsleeve for.

It sits between a longsleeve t-shirt and a sweatshirt. The dense knit keeps you warm without adding bulk. Light enough for summer, it can layer under an overshirt and packs easily.

Launching Thursday, limited to 100.

• Last year, the reaction to the Wilks Overshirt was brilliant - every review is five-star.

It works as an outer layer in warmer months and sits just as well under a jacket. Sharp when it needs to be. Hardwearing enough that I don’t have to be precious with it. A year on, I still wear mine all the time.

Today we launched the second batch - we’ve kept the fabric, details and cut the same. The only change is the lead time.

We’re pulling out all the stops for an early April delivery. The fabric’s ready and production will start as soon as the pre-order window closes on Sunday.

Last year, summer came early. This year we’re ready - batch three of the Otto Shortsleeve is now available to pre-order.

Same cut. Same quality. We’ve added two new colours - Rust and Forest. Both are easy to wear, and pick up a great patina over time.

Since we first launched the Otto, the reaction has been amazing - it’s now being worn in 17 countries.

As always, to keep QC tight, we make in small batches. This run is limited to 200.

Delivery is set for late April, in time for spring.

• The Orkney Scarf is made here in the UK, at a mill founded in 1837. When they were in production last month, we travelled up to take a look.

From start to finish, every process happens under one roof. The raw wool arrives in bales, it’s then dyed, blended, carded and spun, before being woven and finished. With full control at every step, the quality is second to none.

It’s always fun designing accessories – to try something new with colour and pattern. For the Orkney Scarf we developed a two-tone diagonal stripe in merino wool.

They’re made in Yorkshire by one of the last vertical mills in the UK, founded in 1837. Each scarf is long enough to wrap, wear with a knot, or fold in half and loop through.

We have 35 in each colour, ready to ship worldwide for delivery before Christmas.
