It’s Tuesday, which can only mean one thing… it’s day! 🧵✨

If the series has got you keen to start sewing your own clothes, one of your first questions will probably be, “Which sewing machine should I buy?”.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need a top-of-the-range machine to get started.

We’d recommend getting a well-known brand so it’s easy to find parts and get it serviced. And make sure it has:

✂️ A straight stitch
✂️ An adjustable zigzag stitch
✂️ A buttonhole function

That’s enough to sew the vast majority of dressmaking projects. You don’t need lots of fancy stitches!

Then think about how you’ll actually use it:

• Sewing on the kitchen table? A lightweight machine is easier to carry and store.
• Planning to sew regularly? A computerised machine can make life easier with features like a one-step buttonhole, needle up/down and automatic thread cutter.

Our biggest tip?

Don’t get stuck researching forever. Choose a machine that suits your budget, learn the basics, and start sewing. You can always upgrade later as your confidence grows.
