Tonight, the demons come out to play. Tomorrow, Bali falls completely silent.

No electricity. No vehicles. No movement. The airport shuts. An entire island slows & meditates for 24 hours.

On an island stretched to its limits by development, air pollution drops 70-80% in a single day. One tradition. One day. Extraordinary impact.

I have spent years believing it could be one of the most powerful environmental and mental health movements the world has never had.

As someone who has worked in sustainable travel and fashion advocacy for the question I keep asking is — what if the world took just one day a year to stop? Really stop. One city, one state, one country at a time?

No flights. No Work. No scrolling. Just silence.

The carbon savings alone would be staggering. The collective mental reset — unimaginable.

This is my Nyepi mission. And it starts with telling the world this tradition exists.

Meet the woman behind ELECTRA Universe 🐚

Designer. Sustainable Travel Journalist. Ocean Lover.

Born on an island in Singapore & Euarasian, she spent a childhood travelling the globe whilst living between South East Asia. The Maldives & the UK. Setting roots in Bali for 17 years - Electra Gillies' life has been shaped by the sea, by travel, and by communities that live closest to the Earth.

Electra has spent 25 years working at the intersection between sustainability & luxury - before the concept became fashionable.

As a travel journalist, she sought out destinations and communities that understood true sustainability,not as a trend, but as a way of life. That search led her to the artisans of Bali and to the nomadic sea tribes of Indonesia, the Bajau people, who have harvested shells from the ocean for centuries.

Every Cowrie Shell in an ELECTRA creation is sourced directly from them, CITES Certified, and carries a story of millenia. What began as making pieces for herself gradually became something the world noticed. A collaboration with & pieces worn by angels in the swim special. Featured in fashion press globally.

Known as Eco Gypsy for over a decade, in 2025, the brand was reborn as ELECTRA Universe - more personal, global & intentional. Editorial is returning soon for the conscious woman who embraces sustainable sensuality.
