Roger Federer declared the main reasons for his success were "grit" and hard graft as he rejected the theory his tennis game was "effortless".

Federer, one of sport's highest achievers, looked to set the record straight as he delivered a graduation speech, external at Dartmouth College in the United States.

The Swiss swapped the shorts he had worn "almost every day for the last 35 years" for a robe that was "hard to move in" as he spoke when receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the New Hampshire institution.

Back row Maddie Feaunati and prop Liz Crake have been named for the first time among 32 players who have been awarded full-time England contracts for 2024/25.

Of the 32 confirmed, 29 featured in the Red Roses’ successful Grand Slam-winning Six Nations triumph in April.

“This Red Roses group is extremely competitive and the standards continue to go from strength to strength, as evidenced in this year’s Six Nations," said Charlie Hayter, England's head of women’s performance.

Both Feaunati, 22, who plays for Exeter Chiefs, and Trailfinders' Crake, 29, won international caps in this year's Six Nations.

There will be no inquest held into the death of BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright, a coroner’s court has said.

The veteran DJ died at the age of 69 in February.

Westminster Coroner's Court said in a statement: "An inquest will not be required for Mr Wright.

"The coroner has now discontinued this case."

'Not suspicious'
Wright joined the BBC in the 1970s and went on to host the afternoon shows on Radio 1 and Radio 2.

Coroners investigate sudden, violent or unnatural deaths such as an accident or su***de and can also decide whether there are grounds to hold an inquest for a natural death.

The Metropolitan Police previously said Wright's death at a flat Marylebone, central London, "was unexpected, but is not being treated as suspicious".

Organisers of the Newry arts festival have promised to take the arts to the people with events in unusual locations throughout the city.

From comedy to classical music and history brought to life, audiences will have a wealth of choice.

There was even something for the youngest among us.

On Thursday morning, the Imaginarium community centre in the city was packed with infants shaking out their best moves alongside their parents.

It was a "baby boogie", soundtracked by dance classics and described as "a highly imaginative sensory session".

Grainne Powell, who runs Sticky Fingers Arts at the centre, said the arts are "essential in all aspects of society - especially for children and families".

"It is so important that young people and children are given the opportunity to learn how to explore, investigate and play," she added.

"And if we give them more opportunities we can eliminate a lot of the other problems.

"So we need more play and more opportunities like this festival to create a sense of well being for the whole community."

A university is working with a theatre to give students a chance to get involved in productions on and off stage.

Staffordshire University said the partnership with the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford, would offer "golden opportunities".

Under the scheme, drama students will be guaranteed an audition place for the theatre's annual Shakespeare production.

Students on other creative industry courses would also be encouraged to try out backstage and technical roles in other productions, the university added.

British musician Jasdeep Singh Degun has said it is "an absolute honour" to become the first sitar player to win a Royal Philharmonic Society Award.

Degun, from Leeds, was named best instrumentalist at the prestigious classical music ceremony on Tuesday.

He told BBC News the prize was "testament to the hundreds of Indian classical musicians in this country".

"And it feels like we've really stepped forward into the classical psyche, which is wonderful," he said.

Degun picked up his award at a ceremony in Manchester - the first time the RPS event has been held outside London in its 35-year history.

He composed and appeared in Orpheus, an acclaimed new version of Monteverdi's Orfeo combining Indian and Western classical music for Opera North, which was nominated for best large-scale composition.

A street artist said his new work depicting a local rapper represents "hope" and "a way out of trouble".

Stewy has created a stencil of ex-Massive Attack member, Tricky, on the side of the bowls club building in Greville Smyth Park, Bedminster.

The artist said Tricky faced a "troubled upbringing" in Knowle West but went on to success as a musician.

He said he saw his figure of the rapper as a "much-needed symbol of positivity for the area".

Tricky, born Adrian Thaws, rose to prominence with Bristol trip-hop band Massive Attack in the late 1980s.

The musician's early life was marked by many hardships, including a battle with anxiety, a criminal record, and the sudden death of his mother when he was just four years old.

Amy Dowden has revealed that "no evidence of disease" was found during her latest health check.

The Welsh Strictly Come Dancing pro, 33, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer last May.

She took to social media to announce the "words she's been dreaming of" on Friday afternoon.

She also hinted at a return to the hit BBC show which made her name, adding: "Dance floor I'm coming for you."

Caerphilly-born Amy, who joined Strictly in 2017, told fans on Instagram: "No evidence of disease - words I've dreamed of."

Describing the news from doctors as her "biggest accomplishment yet", she added: "I won't be getting the all clear for five years - especially with a hormone fed cancer - but it was all worth it."

The star, who had a mastectomy in June 2023, said that the gruelling months of treatment had "certainly took its toll" on her body "both physically and mentally".

"I will still need a monthly injection for five years and regular check ups," Amy added.

"I have so much to strive and live for and I'm so grateful for another chance at life, something I know not all get.

"I certainly see life differently and my life has changed forever."

The Belfast rap group Kneecap has been blocked from getting a £15,000 grant after the UK government objected.

The band said the grant was approved by an independent selection board but was then "overruled" by the government.

They claimed they were told that their 2019 tour entitled "Farewell to the Union" had angered the Conservatives.

UK Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch's spokesperson said they did not want to hand taxpayers' money "to people that oppose the United Kingdom itself".

Kneecap's representatives had applied for the funding under the Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS), a government-backed initiative which offers grants of up to £50,000 to UK-registered music companies to promote artists in overseas markets.
