Brit sits down with Mickael to chat bow ties and personal style outside of black tie

“I think Jeremy Allen White should give his stylist a bonus”

Q: What’s been your favourite black tie look for the year?
A: I think instead of focusing on one look, I think let’s focus on one person, Jeremy Allen White. So I’ve long admired him just as an actor, but I think this year his style really stood out.

At the SAG-AFTRA Awards, his outfit was really spot on. Like, the proportions were excellent. The small diamond bow tie was really refreshing. And even for someone like me, who usually prefers much larger bow ties, it made a strong case for an understated one. And it actually got me thinking that it might be time to explore smaller designs at la Boutique.

And then his look for the Golden Globes was just as impressive as the first one, and once again, the smaller bow tie worked beautifully.

Q: How do I find the perfect bow tie shape and size for my face?
A: If you’re unsure which design from our collection would suit you best, drop me a line on WhatsApp and I’ll just guide you. I just need a few photos of what you’re planning to wear so I can assess your frame and face shape and make the right recommendation.
And if you can, you should just visit the showroom in London to just try them on.

Q: Socks or sheers?
A: Well, I’d have to say just sheer socks. That’s my personal choice for evening wear. We offer a wide range of silk socks in various colours, all available on the website. It’s quite possibly the best selection you can find online.

So these videos are for you; get involved, comment on the videos, and I’ll get back to you next time

We’re back from Japan and Thailand, and here is what we were up to…

So in Tokyo, we met with our agent, Marukishi, who represents Harrison’s, Fox Brothers, Maison Hellard, and other specialists in the tailoring trade. We also connected with key department stores as we continue to grow internationally, and we also hosted a Black Tie talk for 18 attendees, all in the tailoring trade, sharing insights into what we do at la Boutique and our unique approach to evening wear.

Then on to Bangkok, where we spent time with the team at The Decorum. They stock our products, and we delivered another Black Tie talk in a similar format, and it was nice to finally meet the whole team in person.

What stood out most for me was seeing the level of interest from customers on the other side of the world. People seem genuinely keen to learn more about Black Tie, and it’s definitely made me think about hosting more talks, both in the UK and internationally. And I can’t quite believe I had to go to Japan and to Thailand to realise that.

Stepping away from the showroom also gave me a fresh perspective on the value of what we do and how it’s received globally, which sometimes is hard to perceive from the showroom in London.

I want to thank the teams at Marukishi and at The Decorum, to everyone who joined the talks. And if you’d ever like to host something similar, feel free to get in touch.

Today we’re going to see Matteo for his toile fitting for his dinner suit, and Mateo came to see me because he wanted a long-term dinner suit; very classic, that’s going to last him for the next 10 years. We’ve gone for a very traditional one-button peak lapel.

“My name is Matteo. I’m from Belgium. This suit is for the next 10 years, being ready to go to weddings, to parties, you know, to enjoy, on every festive occasion that will bring a lot of fun memories. You need a good suit. You do. Mika makes the best ones!

So, I’m currently 30 years old. All of my friends are getting married because this is the age that everyone gets married, especially in Belgium. And so a lot of those weddings are also black tie, and I was sick of wearing a 15-year-old black tie suit that didn’t fit me anymore.

You want to have something that’s, like, you know, well-made and that lasts you, you know, a lifetime, basically. That’s the reason.

The fact that you really customise basically everything based on, you know, my body, my posture, how I want things to feel, really. You know, you need to dance in the evening, you want something that’s comfortable, not something that you wear and you think like, “me, I want to take this off”

Une soirée ne commence pas par le port de son costume ni par le spray de son parfum.

Une soirée, ça commence par la soie.

Le l’élégance nocturne est née dans les lieux que personne ne voit et prépare l’individu pour le libertinage qui s’ensuivra.

An evening doesn’t begin with putting on a suit nor with spraying on cologne.

An evening begins with silk.

Nocturnal elegance is born in places no one sees and prepares the individual for the libertinism that will follow.

Well, Black Tie is often talked about, but it’s rarely shown properly, so we decided to do something about that.

We’re taking our reference book, Modern Black Tie, and we’re bringing it to life, turning every single page into a video series.

And this isn’t about rules for the sake of rules. It’s about understanding why Black Tie works, when to wear it, and how to make it your own.

So we’ll cover the classics, the dinner suits, the occasions that call for it, and the foundations that you should know. But we won’t stop there. We’ll explore every variation of the dinner jacket, from the traditional black to bold textures and colours, shirts, bow ties, cummerbunds, waistcoats, shoes, socks, and all the detail in between that turn an outfit into a statement.

And this series is for the curious. It’s you, the detail obsessed, and anyone who’s ever wanted to get Black Tie right.

So sit down, grab some popcorn, and tune in weekly.

IMAGINE THIS

“ Mika, picture this: you are on a cruise, there’s a jazz band playing, and it’s a starlit sky. What are you wearing for it and why?”

Black tie, obviously! On cruises you tend to have black tie events most nights. So, first thing I would say is bring a few black tie outfits, not just one.

One thing I would quite like to do on a cruise is probably wearing a dinner jacket that’s slightly different from standard, maybe a nice pale blue to remind the fact that you are on the water – like a Moiré jacket.

I would wear black trousers, or white trousers, ‘cause that’s something that people used to do on cruises back then. And a nice classic bow tie and some good shoes for dancing.

“You are in London, you are heading to Ronnie Scott’s. There’s a chill in the air and a light rain. What are you wearing in why?”

I’m probably going to wear something a bit more interesting than a very traditional black tie. So maybe an off-white jacket with black trousers.

I think it’s quite reminiscent, you know, of the jazz era where a lot of musicians used to wear them in bands. So I’d probably wear that. And an interesting bow tie, maybe a Diamond or Continental.

“You’re going to a wedding in the south of France. You by the sea, there’s classical music playing. What you going to wear and why?”

I’m going to bring my whole wardrobe so I can just stay there for a while. But for a wedding in the south of France, I would keep it classic, ‘cause if it’s not your wedding don’t wear any kind of white.

So I’d probably wear maybe a midnight blue, that would be a bit softer than a black. Hopefully you’ve got slightly better weather than we do here in the UK – but keep it traditional. So midnight blue, single-breasted peak lapel. Yeah, don’t try to outshine the groom.
