During the First Lockdown, I worked with Riive, a tiny, volunteer-led arts organisation in South-West London, run by people living with disabilities.

We developed a campaign for a pilot project ‘Documenting Disability on Film’; a remote documentary filmmaking project helping people re-shape representations of disability by co-producing a short film about their everyday lives. It has been thought-provoking, and also very challenging. Perhaps the biggest challenge has been producing an illustration that authentically represents the ‘everydayness’ of living with a disability, without over-simplifying or stereotyping peoples experiences. On the one hand, people seem to be used to safe, visual clues on disability (i.e. a wheelchair), but on the other hand that’s not very representative of disability (i.e. so-called ‘invisible’ disabilities).
