Clara and Macy is a small family run business who design personalised and creative products for chil

The idea of making a family smile, helping them spend time together, and adding a little bit of magic into their everyday, is exactly what we love. Set up by Laura Clempson in 2012 after working as a puppet maker in animation for ten years. The time had come when Laura really wanted to work on her own designs rather than other peoples. It started with sketches of two little characters called Clara

and Macy, a pair of girls who loved spending time together, who were destined for picture books. The plan was to design a few products and then contact publishers with the idea. The products turned into a range, the range turned into a business, and the business grew out of her house and into the gorgeous studio and four person team that we have now. And Laura still hasn't had time to actually contact those publishers! Clara and Macy is very much a family business, with products designed for families and made by our own family. With four children the inspiration for new product ideas is endless! Clara and Macy use ethically sourced materials, we're environmentally responsible, and our four-person team carefully hand makes all of your orders in our little studio in Altrincham, Cheshire.

WHY IS IT ALWAYS AT 3AM?! 🫠

Running a small business is a rollercoaster at the best of times, but this year is something else and the 3am worry has been strong.

But it doesn’t take much for my brain to feel right again. Three orders pinging in together today was enough to quiet the brain gremlins.

Because those three orders were just what I needed to remind me that there is hope. That’s the small business way, right? Despair, worry, gratitude, and joy all rolled into one!

I don’t know whether the business will make it through this year, but I’ll be here keeping the good moments in my head and trying to overthink the best outcome instead 💛

NOT THE BIG LIGHT!! 💡❌

The weather this week is CRAZY! I mean every season in one day is an understatement, we’re cycling through seasons every 15 minutes here. Sun, rain, hail, gales… you name it, we’ve got it.

Which means that the studio goes dark quickly, bringing its most wintery feel, and lack of light.

But am I going to give in and turn on the big light? No. Even if I have to squint through the dim half light while packing orders? Or if I have to thread my sewing machine by torchlight? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I will always say no to the big light 😂

The soft, cosy, twinkly lights will be just fine thank you!!

April 💛 It’s been a rollercoaster of a month.

The juggle of four kids and a business has been a tricky one this month, but we made it through mostly unscathed. Apart from the wasp sting 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s been a clash of the seasons in the business with Spring, Father’s Day, and Christmas happening all at once. I love it and it’s complete chaos!

We’ve reached exam season for the oldest two, which has come around too quickly. It’s started with art, and will lead into drama next week, before the many other subjects start their exams the week after. Cross your fingers for us all!

Thankfully, there is always plenty of tea ☕️

I am not prepared 🤯

Double exam season is upon us and I am so out of my depth. I need your tips!

We’ve got one doing A Levels and another doing GCSEs, AT THE SAME TIME, plus two other kids and keeping the business going, and it’s a lot.

Have you been through this season? How did you survive?

Please send me your ideas on how to keep everyone steady over the next couple of months, and make sure everyone comes out the other side in one piece!

Hands up if you’re a small business owner already working on Christmas 🙌

Isn’t it such a WEIRD time of year?! I don’t know about you but at the moment it feels like all the seasons are colliding in the studio.

Blossom is out, and so is the Christmas planning. Along with Father’s Day, summer designs, and lots of spring stuff as well 🌷☀️🎄 Let’s not even mention end of/back to school 😂

Every day lately my brain is spinning! You too?

I’m ALL about Christmas though, so I secretly love it. Designing magic all year round? Yes please 🥹

I designed this wreath decoration to be a proper family heirloom and it turned out more beautifully than I could have possibly imagined! I wanted something that inspired the magic of Christmases past and brought joy to your current family traditions. A decoration that wouldn’t have looked out of place in my favourite old shop, Past Times. Do you remember Past Times? It was the most stunning old fashioned shop 🥹

ALWAYS ADVENTURING 💚

What makes our mini sewing kits so good? I’ll give you my top five favourite things…
