Sometimes it may feel like your cat can dig, dig, dig when they use their litter tray. But why do cats bury their poo?

Cats bury their p**p primarily for instinctual and social reasons:

1. Instinct to Hide Their Presence (Survival Behavior)

In the wild, smaller or subordinate cats bury their f***s to hide their presence from predators or more dominant cats. The scent of f***s can signal territory or vulnerability. By burying it, they avoid attracting unwanted attention.

2. Respecting Dominance (Territorial Hierarchy)

In multi-cat environments (even if it’s just you and your cat), burying p**p can be a sign of submission. Dominant cats may leave their waste uncovered to mark territory, while more submissive cats cover it to avoid conflict.

3. Cleanliness and Comfort

Cats are naturally clean animals. Burying their waste helps keep their living area tidy and reduces odor, which also benefits them in the wild by reducing scent trails.

Bonus: Why So Much Digging?

Sometimes, the enthusiastic digging isn’t just about burying — it can also be about:
• Trying to find the right spot or depth
• Enjoying the texture of the litter
• Stress or boredom
• Disliking the litter type or box setup

If it seems excessive, it might be worth checking that:
• The litter is unscented and feels natural
• The box is clean and roomy
• There’s enough litter depth (about 2–3 inches)

So while your cat’s dramatic digging may seem like a quirky performance, it’s deeply rooted in their wild ancestry and social instincts!
