Forced marriage is a serious safeguarding issue in the UK, and midwives can play an important role in helping those at risk. We often build trusting relationships with women, allowing us to notice signs of fear or pressure. Midwives can provide a safe space to talk, offer support, and refer women to specialist services to help protect their safety and wellbeing.

You can call Karma Nirvanan on 0800 5999 24/7 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)

For support around forced marriage and honour crimes.
You can also call 020 7008 0151 to speak to the GOV.UK Forced Marriage Unit.

Let’s Talk FGM…

FGM can lead to several complications during pregnancy and childbirth, including…

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Increased risk of difficult or prolonged labour

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Higher chance of needing interventions (such as caesarean section or assisted delivery)

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Greater risk of heavy bleeding (postpartum haemorrhage)

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Higher likelihood of tears or the need for surgical cutting (episiotomy)

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Increased risk of infections for both mother and baby

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Greater chance of stillbirth or early newborn death

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Urinary problems and pain during pregnancy

🫱🏼‍🫲🏾 Emotional distress or trauma during childbirth

These risks depend on the type and severity of FGM, but overall it makes pregnancy and delivery more dangerous for both mother and baby.

Whether you are pregnant or not, you can get information and support from any healthcare professional. You can also find details of specialist FGM clinics and services at: www.nhs.uk/fgm

Keep in mind that FGM is against the law in the UK. It is also illegal to organise or help arrange for someone to be taken out of the country for this purpose. FGM is widely recognised as a violation of human rights, offers no medical benefits, and causes significant harm to girls and women in multiple ways.

Pregnancy Choices

If you are pregnant you may feel a whole range of different emotions. Its best if possible, to try and talk these through with someone you trust, a family member or friend.

If you are pregnant you have 3 options:

• You can continue with the pregnancy and have a baby
• You can have the baby and have it adopted
• You can have an abortion (sometimes called a termination)

Whatever you decide, it is your decision!

If you are unsure as to what to do, specialist support and advice is available to help you make the right choice and who will provide non-judgemental support to help you make your decision.

Baby Basics is a UK charity that provides essential items for families with young children, from pregnancy up to age five.
They offer support such as clothing, nappies, toiletries, and larger items like Moses baskets and cots.
The service is designed to help families facing difficult circumstances, including financial hardship, domestic abuse, or seeking asylum, ensuring every child has a safe and supported start in life.

To receive help, Baby Basics works through a referral system. This means you’ll need to speak to a professional you trust—such as your midwife, health visitor, GP, or a local support organisation—who can request support on your behalf. This helps make sure you get the right help as quickly as possible.

Domestic abuse is a serious issue in the UK, and midwives are in a unique position to support women experiencing it. Through the close relationships we build during pregnancy, we may notice signs that others miss. By creating a safe and non-judgemental space, midwives can encourage women to speak openly, offer reassurance, and connect them with specialist support to help keep them safe and supported.
You are not alone.

The Unity Midwives
“Sisters in Strength”

We are a collective of dedicated student midwives in South Yorkshire, standing beside women during some of the most vulnerable, complex, and life-changing moments they may face.

The Unity Midwives was created to support women through pregnancy and beyond—especially those affected by worry, abuse, abandonment, mental health, addiction, FGM, religious control, and safety concerns. We are here without judgement, without stigma, and without conditions.

Our purpose is to create a safe, trusted space where women feel heard, protected, and empowered. We offer compassionate support, honest guidance, access to vital resources, and help in times of urgency—because no woman should ever feel alone in her journey.

We believe in strength through unity. In dignity without question. In safety without compromise.

Every woman deserves to feel secure in her body, her choices, and her path into motherhood.

With The Unity Midwives, you are seen. You are supported. You are never alone.
