Another holiday post, this time from Chateau d’If, a 16th century fortress built on a small island facing Marseille in the south of France. Originally constructed to defend the harbour, it later became an infamous prison with the most notorious prisoner being the fictional Count of Monte Cristo. It’s interesting to see how fiction has overtaken fact. In the 19th century, tourists visiting the island were entertained by elaborate stories of past prisoner, with each cell assigned to a historic figure including the Count of Monte Cristo. This now as much a part of the history of the site as its ‘real’ past.

We had a lovely outing to the V&A’s Fashioning Masculinities exhibition last week. Highlights included the elegant figleaf ensemble by Vivienne Westwood, Edward VIII’s jazzy tartan suit and a teddy boy’s suit. As usual, the mounting was fantastic and we loved the way the 18th century costume was complimented by organza hair and shoes.

We said goodbye to the May Morris embroidery a couple of weeks ago after stitching it to a custom made padded board. Looking forward to seeing how our client chooses to frame it.

We’ve been using solvents to reduce the adhesive residue on a silk baby smock. It’s successfully removed the hard encrusted areas, but the staining is proving harder to shift. Time for further testing!

Creating a stitched support patch with a visual infill can be tricky when it’s not a plain fabric. Here we’ve used Melinex to draw a template of the remaining design that will help us to make a matching embroidered patch to ‘fill in the gaps’ in this lovely chair.

We were busy last week flat-mounting and installing some traditional Malaysian silk outfits. They are part of the Tenun Pahang: Weaving Hope exhibition at the Malaysian High Commission which is part of London Craft Week, presented by Her Majesty Queen Azizah, Queen of Malaysia and curated by Judith Clark.

We developed a ‘jigsaw’ of internal pads which were held to the display boards by magnets. These meant that the delicate and fragile silk of the tops did not have to bear undue stress from supporting the weight of the pads and the skirts while allowing space for the skirts to lie flat inside the tops.
