YOU GUESSED IT… MEET THE TEAM MONDAY 😉

Meet Hattie, the youngest member of our team and a future saddle fitter with a passion that’s been years in the making! 🐴

Hattie has dreamed of becoming a saddle fitter since her mid-teens. After studying at Capel Manor and completing the Society of Master Saddlers Introduction to Saddle Fitting course, she has spent countless hours shadowing Liz, attending clinics, and generally absorbing as much knowledge as possible. According to Liz, Hattie is now “finally useful” and she’s more than happy to trust her to get on with the job 😅

Having ridden since she was four years old and with a particular love for showjumping, Hattie brings plenty of practical riding experience to her saddle fitting journey. She loves the problem-solving side of the job, is always keen to learn something new, and enjoys building relationships with both horses and their humans!

Hattie will complete her saddle flocking and adjustment qualification in the next few weeks and is on track to achieve her full SMS Saddle Fitting qualification later this year. Once qualified, she’ll continue assisting Liz at clinics while building her own client base across Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon and Bedford. When she’s not talking saddles, horses, or more saddles, you’ll likely find her admiring Land Rovers, embracing full country-girl life and tucking into a joint of beef every Sunday after a tiring day of saddle fitting clinics with Liz (Liz’s practical jokes being the most tiring part of the day!)

We’re incredibly proud of how far Hattie has come and excited to watch her continue her journey. ♥️

Meet Flip (or Sue - but two Sue’s gets confusing, ha!), who has been part of the Mill Saddlery team for the past 18 months. Specialising in saddle and tack repairs, as well as reflocking. She loves working with leather and enjoys the challenge that comes with restoring and repairing well-loved equipment.

Horses have been a big part of her life since she was 17, with a particular passion for carriage driving. After spending 8 years working for the British Driving Society, she retired and turned her attention to something she has enjoyed for years - saddle and tack repairs.

She enjoys problem solving and finding ways to bring damaged items back to life. One thing she will tell you, though: don’t bring your clothes to her for repairs! 😆 What she enjoys most about Mill Saddlery is the friendly atmosphere and being part of a team that shares her passion for quality craftsmanship and customer care. 🐴✨

Meet the Team Monday 💥

Introducing Carolyn - our saddlery multi-talented powerhouse! Carolyn is one of our saddle fitters, covering the western part of our region as she is based in Cambridgeshire.

Carolyn has been hooked on horses since her first riding lesson when she was 7 - growing up just outside Newmarket meant she could take weekend jobs on studs and in sales/breaking yards which gave her experience of many of the different equine spheres including working with racehorses, polo ponies, eventers, breeding stock and show ponies.

She is a highly skilled and extensively qualified saddlery professional with over 25 years of experience in traditional saddlery, bridle making, harness making, saddle making, fitting, repair, and bespoke leatherwork… The list goes on! 🤯 Having begun formal training in 2000, she has progressed through a comprehensive series of industry-recognised qualifications, culminating in Master Saddler status in 2014 and subsequent recognition as a Master Harness Maker (2017) and Master Bridle Maker (2019).Her expertise covers the full spectrum of saddlery disciplines, including bespoke bridlework, harness making, saddle fitting and repairs. Impressive, right?

To book a saddle fitting appointment with Carolyn, contact Mill Saddlery (drop us a message or give us a call). For saddlery and harness enquiries, contact her directly via her website - https://www.bespoke-bridlework.co.uk

Kimblewick Equestrian Centre have us visit every 3 months to maintain the fit of the saddles on their riding school horses & ponies to keep them as comfortable as possible. 🐴

Obviously these horses & ponies work a little bit harder than the average horse or pony & carry a variety of riders. In addition to the regular saddle checks many of the horses & ponies have a prolite pad under their saddles… this isn’t to make an ill fitting saddle fit but to help absorb & dissipate pressure particularly with the horses & ponies carrying the more novice & unbalanced riders.

Kimblewick tend to favour the prolites that have pockets for shims so if a horse or pony develops an asymmetry or is displacing their saddle sideways we can utilise the shims to balance the saddle to keep everyone as straight as possible - swipe across to see how these insert ➡️

We had a fab saddle fitting clinic at last week! 🐴

With a really light & airy indoor school with a beautifully presented cared for surface, plenty of parking…. Aaaand a coffee machine, this is perfect place to bring your horse for a saddle check/fit!

Georgie & Danny last had their saddle checked in the new year. Georgie was conscious that Danny had… ermm… been enjoying life & had wintered well 😉 Good call to get the saddle checked as he’d gone up 2 headplate sizes! We’re sure it’s all muscle, ha 🤠

We are next at Suffolk Rural Farm in Otley on the 26th July ⭐

Thanks to all who paid us a visit! Who is joining us at Hill Farm this Sunday 24th? 🐎

Are you new to saddle fitting, or has it been a while since your last appointment?

We have a few tips to help you get the best out of your appointment - being as prepared as you can be will give us more time assessing your horse and exploring your options!

Simple things like having your horse in and ready to ride and having your existing tack at the ready makes things easier for all involved! 🐴💙

🐴 Have your horse ready in the stable / yard

🐴 Ensure your horse’s saddle & girth area is clean and dry

🐴 Pick out your horse’s hooves - this will ensure the horse moves with their natural gait

🐴 Have your chosen numnah / saddle pad clean and ready

🐴 Bring your existing saddle(s) and your current riding accessories

🐴 Ensure the location is suitable for the consultation and assessment (e.g paddock / arena)

*Meet the Team - Part 2!*

Sarah has been in the industry for over 15 year and has been co-owner of Mill Saddlery for the last 12. She joined Mill Saddlery as a bit of a ‘stopgap’ in between jobs and was out on the road shadowing Liz saddle fitting in a matter of weeks… The rest is history! 😅

Like many of us, horses have been a huge part of Sarah’s life for as long as she remembers and her love for them has carried through many facets of her career and beyond - from teaching, showing, dressage (herself and her children!), being qualified BHS stages 1, 2 & 3, saddle fitting and more! Most recently she has stepped into the world of carriage driving! 🐴
She loves the industry and particularly enjoys the variety her job brings, from meeting all sorts of people and their horses, being outdoors and the great satisfaction that comes from helping the relationship between horse and rider!

Has Sarah helped you? 🐴
