Since my Baba died, I've been thinking a lot about ancestors & roots 🌾 all my grandparents had to leave their homes, many forced, by occupation and war - some of them never got to go back again. I'm so proud of them and their stories, and even though I feel a great privilege to live in this country as a British citizen I am so proud of those roots...especially at a time when Ukrainian culture, language and identity is so under threat.
I found this audio of me singing with my friends in the summer - we sing together a lot, this was during the early hours of the morning after many a wisniowka (cherry vodka) 😂🍒 it's not perfect but it is so, so pure. Ancient songs in a language often banned and restricted, but those songs survived all that turmoil to get here. To us. Safe in our hands, generation upon generation after they were first sung.
On the days I have the feeling that I am not enough, that what I do is not enough, let me remember - us - that the ancestors got us to this point. They would marvel at the lives we live, the worlds we have created for ourselves. We are their biggest gift and their wildest dreams combined 💫
And next time I forget that, I'm gonna listen to this song 🩵💛 and tell my friends how lucky I feel we got brought to this point together.

Today marks 35 years of an independent Ukraine 💙💛 even under fire, under missiles, under drone attacks, under partial occupation + widespread oppression, that glimmer of independence shines bright. It is in our blood, in our bones, this inherent push to keep going until we are fully free.
Today I send love to all my Ukrainian friends and family, especially those back in Ukraine who are living with the consequences of war on a daily basis. We miss you so deeply, and we live in hope for a day when we can be together again under a peaceful sky - sat in the town square with people we love, hearing music and church bells rather than sirens and blasts. That day will come, but I know the human cost for it will be even greater than what has been paid so far ❤️‍🩹
What can you do today? Keep Ukraine alive. Speak about it, ask about it, donate, spread the word, work towards stopping misinformation being spread. Send love to your Ukrainians. Honour the dead. Give the living hope. I truly believe we will win this war but we can only manage it with the help of friends.
