Jake and one of the fellow members of the Axis Mundi Explorers Club went down to Old Sarum castle today to visit the ruins of the various different time periods that have left their scars on these ancient earthworks! 🌍
It's uses have ranged from burial mounds and earthworks for ceremony in the neolithic period, an iron age hill fort, then a military fort for the Romans, to finally a royal castle built by the Normans ⚔️
Most of what we see today built in flint is the remnants of the norman period castle. With the remains of a cathedral built around the same time left on the flatland behind the main earthworks🏔
It's later history is multifaceted, with the town finally coming to a mysterious end before mostly being dismantled for construction of the new sarum soon to be salisbury! 🏗
Supposedly the place for salisbury cathedral was chosen by and arrow shot from old sarum that hit a white deer, and the place the deer fell was to be the chosen spot. Or so the story goes! 📖
Watch out for Jakes youtube videos giving a better breakdown on exploring the ruins 🪨
