Story of Embroidery on Kente

‎Kente is a traditional handwoven cloth that originated from the Ashanti (Asante) and Ewe people of Ghana. It is known for its bright colours, symbolic patterns, and deep cultural meanings. Traditionally, kente was woven from silk and cotton on narrow looms by skilled male weavers.

‎How Embroidery Came into Kente

‎Originally, kente cloth was not embroidered. The designs and patterns were created directly through weaving techniques — using different colours of thread to form geometric shapes and symbols.

‎However, over time, embroidery (the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread) was introduced to add more beauty, uniqueness, and meaning to the kente cloth. This blending of embroidery with kente came about mainly due to modern fashion influences and creative innovation among Ghanaian
