The
how and when behind making candy wrapper purses is somewhat varied.
Some have said that the technique started in prisons. It was a way for
inmates to pass time and create products to sell. Another story is that
people in Mexico and Guatemala started making these purses as a way to
support their families. Whatever the true story is, the idea is a
wonderful way to recycle anything from candy wrappers, magazines, junk
mail, wrapping paper, and newspapers. When I was a kid, we would fold
Starburst wrappers and make them into chains for bracelets. Each piece
of these purses is individually folded and woven together into a chain
and joined together to make a ring. The rings are sewn together with
anything from embroidery thread to fishing line. The process of sewing
the rings together makes the purse stiff and very sturdy. It takes
several hours to complete even a small clutch size purse. The larger
purse take a few days. In a sense, each purse is a piece of artwork.
