Kola kanda is a traditional herbal congee made from raw rice, coconut milk and the fresh juice of medicinally valued leafy greens 🌿

The leaves may include gotukola, karapincha, welpenela, iramusu, hatawariya, Polpala, karapincha or ranawara, depending upon the type of ailment that is being sought to prevent or cure.

It’s typically served at breakfast, originating in the Buddhist monastic code as a restorative meal in the morning after a period of fasting in the evening, as Buddhist monks are only permitted to eat breakfast and lunch.

The photo shown above is one of our delicious recipe of Kola Kanda, with red rice, and coconut milk and mixed with the juices from the Gotu Kola leaves, which are added for their healing properties.

The Gotu Kola is ‘family’ of the parsley plant, under the dark leafy greens. Often because the taste can be slightly bitter, it is served with a piece of jaggery or palm sugar.
