~ PHULKARI ~
(Behind the Scenes🎥)

This story is about an Indian girl who has fallen prey to the fast-paced routine of the modern world. A world which wants everything fast and perfect. A world where wearing colour is an act of rebellion. A world where traditional crafts are dying and being replaced by fast fashion. A world where community is being replaced by machines. She has lost touch with her identity as an Indian, specifically as a Punjabi. She doesn’t know her native language, her craft, her culture and traditions. Until she notices colour peeking through her denim jacket, which leads her to unpack a whole other side of herself that she had forgotten. That which had always been there within her in the form of textiles, fabrics, and craft passed down from generations of women.

The overarching themes are the destruction of indigenous Punjabi crafts and culture by colonisation, westernisation & industrialisation. The Traditional hand-embroidered craft of Punjab, Phulkari, is slowly disappearing and being replaced with machine-made embroidery, fast fashion, consumerism, and mass-produced products (like denim).
