Tripwears

Tripwears Travel & Lifestyle Blog I am awfully greedy! I want everything from life. It is this tightrope walk that is my life and I love every minute of it.

To be a business-woman with roots in a society and also to be a rootless nomad wandering the earth. I want to be the avant-garde femme on the edge of fashion and the backpacker who hasn’t bathed in 5 days.

“Why do you live in India?”

I’ve traveled across the world and many people have asked me this question.

Why indeed?

At its heart, despite the chaos and pollution, the perceived divisions and decay,

India is the most secular country I’ve ever lived in. It’s the country that offers the most grace. The most Unsolicited care.

This is a story about a train journey, a neighbor who tracked my milk bill, about a country that offers you sense a belonging even when you don’t ask for it.

If you have ever felt held by this country, this one is for you.

✍️ Tell me, when did India remind you that you are not alone?

You may not be my whole world and all the people in it, but you’re definitely the axis upon which my world spins. Lover, friend, husband, father, partner in life- I’m lucky to have found you and grown up with you you. Happy birthday ! I know you’re growth is going to be phenomenal and one day, it will look like an overnight success, but I know the blood, tears and sweat that have gone into making you who you are. I look forward to seeing your journey, being incredibly proud of it, and sharing every step of that journey with you!

We were driving to our vacation rental. My daughter was asleep on my lap, as she had been for the last hour. I hadn’t stirred the entire time, because I didn’t want to disturb her. The sun was shining down from one window, so to shield her face, I was using the large sleeve of my kaftan style top to cover her face. It was awkward and uncomfortable, but I wouldn’t move for anything. She’d had an early morning, and I was going to give her every precious moment of sleep.

As I stared out the window at the beautiful landscape of Kerala, I thought back to those times when I was younger, when I slept on my mother’s lap. We hadn’t traveled in an air conditioned car then. We used to travel by bus or train, like any other middle- class family. And my mother would hold me, hours on end, not moving or stirring, not a word of complaint on her lips. It must have been hard, very hard, because many times, I wouldn’t get a seat in those over- crowded buses. Dad offered to take me, but I’d usually cling to my mother, because her lap was more comfortable.

This- this is motherhood. I’m sure my mother doesn’t remember those moments as particularly important ones. Her expression of love was the most natural thing in the world. This prioritising of another life over your own, over your every need, which happens almost subconsciously. For which you want no accolades, nor even acknowledgement. This is motherhood.

Happy Mother’s Day - to every incredible mother out there! Happy Mother’s Day, Amma- I have no other words for everything you were, Are and will be, to me and mine.

Every day you live,
Is your life in miniature.
There is no waiting for tomorrow,
Or the weekend or a vacation,
To experience joy, to appreciate your family,
To take that chance, to show your love.

The past is your memory, the future is your imagination.
Both exist only in your head.
The only reality is today.
Today could be the last day you live.
Today could be the first day of the rest of your life.
Either way, your today, your every day, is more a cause for celebration,
Than any imagined ideal future, or any sweet halcyon past.

Are you perceiving the reality that exists in that diamond hard space between your yesterday and Tomorrow?

A throwback to sun-kissed days, wind swept hair and salty toes. A reminder that you can sometimes have days when the most difficult decision you have to make is what new cocktail to try that night. A silent prayer that I can experience these things in my life. A sigh of gratitude that while I love those kind of days, I also love my every day because I love my life. 🐠

Happy Pongal from me and mine!!! There’s a saying in Tamil that goes, Thai porandha vazhi porakkum, which means that the birth of the Tamizh month of Thai brings new beginnings, new paths, new ways. Light if you have been in darkness. When you allow the pot of milk to boil over, you’re thanking the Sun God for his bounties, and hope that joy, success, prosperity, health and wealth always overflow in your household. So, that’s my wish for you this year! May any and all bounties you wish for, find their way to you! Iniya Thai Pongal Vazhthukkal!!

If stones could talk, what stories they would tell! Timeless stories of love and hate, kindness and cruelty. Of birth and death and war and plague and triumph and despair. They would tell that nothing lasts forever, that the powerful and the meek are one in the final embrace of the earth. Perhaps they would ring so loudly with their tales that none could stand it. Perhaps that’s why they stand silent; wordless sentinels merely observing the passage of time. And the cycle of life. And maybe, just maybe, the not knowing is a kindness.

Diwali marks the beginning of my favourite time of the year. There’s Diwali, the Festival of Lights that everyone knows about, then there’s Karthigai, another Festival of Lights that people celebrate by different names in different parts of India. And then come Thanksgiving, Christmas and New year. All in all, so many reasons to get together with family and friends and celebrate. :) My heart is fullest during this season of love and light.
