We had ice cream at Keventer’s today. It is called Softy. They sprinkled little pieces of cherry on the top. We enjoyed very much.
Mrs. told me that we can have ice cream in a hill station. Before this, my mother never allowed and always said, “Thhanda lege jabey!” (You will catch cold.)

Kanchenjungha did not appear this time. Mrs. forced me to wake up very early in the morning, but even then we could not spot Kanchenjungha.
We went to Das Studio and purchased a black-and-white print of Kanchenjungha as a memento. We will frame it and hang it in our drawing room.
We enjoyed Ghoom Monastery very much. Very peaceful.

Overall, Darjeeling was a very enjoyable experience. A place to visit again and again.

Darjeeling - The Queen of hills. Queen of hearts.

Four sweaters. Two Monkey Caps. One umbrella.
And one camera with 24 exposures.
With absolutely no idea how to pose.

We took the toy train. It took 3 hours to go somewhere a car could reach in 45 minutes, and somehow we didn’t complain.
We drank endless cups of tea. I missed my doodh-chaa. She was happy with her likaar-tea!
Clouds entered our room unannounced. Like IT raid officers.
Kanchenjunga appeared like salaries. Vanished in seconds.
The local kids looked like dolls. They had apple cheeks. And she wanted to talk to each one of them.
We posed amidst chaa bagan.
Badly, of course.
We walked around Chowrasta, bought woollen socks which we might never need, ate momos, held hands inside our pockets because it was cold and came back to the hotel smelling faintly of cloud and wool.

Now when I look back, I don’t remember how many times Kanchenjunga showed up.
I just remember who was standing beside me when it did.

My earliest memory of Puri was Nirjon Shoikote by Tapan Sinha. It sounds strange because it certainly wasn’t a children’s film. But I watched it one Sunday evening, at a time when watching a DD Bangla film was almost a ritual in our home — one that belonged mostly to the adults.

I remember feeling a deep sense of melancholy about Puri.

I was far too young to understand the romantic undercurrent between Anil Chatterjee and Sharmila Thakur. What stayed with me instead were Chhaya Debi, Renuka Debi, Bharati Debi and Ruma Guha Thakurta — the four widows who travelled to Puri hoping to calm the storm their niece was going through after a heartbreak.

What amuses me now is how, over several trips, Puri slowly managed to undo that melancholy and replace it with happier things.

Jagannath Mandir. Pandas. Purir Lathhi. Khaja. Sea shells. Bone-breaking waves. Konark. Udaygiri and Khandagiri. Chilka Lake. Puri Hotel balconies. Overnight journeys on the Jagannath and Puri Express. And, inevitably, half the beach hidden in the hems of our clothes.

Oh and yes, Honeymoon couples. So much love!
Puri became a balm for the soul.

That incomparable Bengali holiday mix of fun, faith and romance — all stirred together like milk, sugar and tea.

This series is a celebration of that perfect cup of milk tea.

Best enjoyed from a balcony at Puri Hotel, with the sea singing not melancholy, but a tune from 90s.

I have often wondered why Bengalis visit Puri more than Digha inspite of the former being outside West Bengal. I used to ask this question to my father and he always said: Jagannath.
The mix of Tirtho (holy place) and the sea. Having prayers answered and having fun. Lethal combination.
Sprinkled with the joy of Purir Khaja, Kotki blouse pieces, Sambalpuri sharee, Purir gamcha, Puri hotel and sea facing room which was Bengali’s Michelin star indulgence and Swargodhwar.
Also the ease of an overnight journey by train.

Honeymoon.
Goa or Maldives were out of question. Mandarmani was out of map.
Digha served as the primary honeymoon spot for middle class Bengalis.
CSTC wooden floor buses (Leyland models), non AC, chop-muri “hault” at Mecheda-Kolaghat and a long 6-7 hours around the Contai route.
In joint family set up, ‘privacy’ was like Lord Voldemort - one who must not be named. So honeymoons meant a room with a door that could finally be shut.
Digha. Newly married. Life through rose tinted glass. Falling in love. Easing the arranged marriage awkwardness. Awkward hand positions (many men were shy to put arms around and heir wives), red-eyed flash photos. Local photographers delivering envelopes of happiness on the next day in the hotel room. Saikatabash. Jhaau Bon. Casuarina. Jhinuker goyna.
