They say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and it is especially true for Handloom. because only a few handful of women will find beauty in these slower, harder and often more expensive products like purely handwoven sarees. only If you find it beautiful you probably will find the price justified. otherwise no matter how many time we explain the process of hand spinning, natural dyeing, winding the warp, weaving slowly and solely by hand by picking each thread for creating design will not satisfy your choice. especially when visually more appealing sarees are available at fraction of its price.

I always believe that for people who buy saree online, not choosing to buy a handloom is rarely a matter of affordability but a matter of mindset. it is about what you value, how the world around you had shaped your eyes to recognise and appreciate beauty and ultimately what you are willing to pay for.

because women who know they know.
They do not buy handloom to follow a trend, they choose it to feel something, which probably is different for everyone. some feel good about the long tradition and history that it carries, some want to curate one heirloom piece at a time, for some its the pride of owning an one of a kind saree, some might value sustainability and some would love the comfort of wearing something made by hand. It is about appreciating the time, skill, imperfections and human hands behind every piece. When you truly understand and fall in love with that story, the saree becomes more than just something you wear—it becomes something you value.

These are the people who have kept handloom alive, because the day these people will stop cherishing handmade things, it will disappear without any trace.

I have curated a few pieces of Kotpad this week. Will post one by one. From start to finish one saree would need a minimum of 45 days to finish. Only a few artisans in the Koraput region of Odisha are still doing these the way it is meant to be using only natural dyes.

People my age, who grew up in the late ’80s and ’90s, would remember how clothes shopping was mostly done during major festive times like Durga Puja or Diwali. Everything we needed—daily wear, semi-festive and special occasion clothes—was bought around the same time.
For daily and semi-festive wear, Maa would go to the main market to buy fabric by the yard and then head to the local tailoring shop. All those designs saved over the year from Soviet Nari, an imported glossy magazine, and from other magazines like Manorama and Sananda would be taken out for some brainstorming with the local tailor. Laces, buttons and other trims were chosen accordingly.
But for festive and special clothing, all of us would take a trip to Kolkata. In the bigger shops, we would buy something shiny, handcrafted and special—a mirror-embroidered lehenga for the teenager, the Akshay Kumar-advertised denim for the boys, and handloom silks for the lady of the house. All in one day, rounded off with a wonderful meal at a good restaurant.
Festive shopping has changed a lot since then. The number of times we shop and the way we buy are completely different now. Yet, the tradition of buying at least one good piece for ourselves and our loved ones remains unchangedr
Is it the same for you??
