Pakhangba is the serpentine deity of the Meitei people of Manipur. Born out of the supreme being and the Earth goddess, he is the ruler of the Earth and the protector of the realms, often depicted symbolically in geometric diagrams called ‘Paphal’. These diagrams symbolise ancient maps of cosmic currents, planetary alignments, and the internal nervous system of the Earth - each tied to different manifestations of energy used in royal rituals, clan lineages and protective talismans.

We've gotten used to talking about attention like it's a battery — something we were born with a full charge of, that apps have been draining ever since. It's a tidy story. It's also the wrong metric. Attention isn't a battery level. It's a skill, the same category as balance, or a foreign language, or parallel parking — something you get better at only by doing the specific, slightly uncomfortable version of it on purpose.

Who knew that the other aspect of my internet-hopping around that time (staring at images from space missions) would take me to places where I could experience some of these cuisines in their local settings! The best part was when I realised that I genuinely liked most of the dishes I tried. By that I mean I cannot relate to people who complain about Northern Europe’s obsession with potatoes. I grew up in a Bengali household, eating potatoes from breakfast to dinner is my definition of a normal day.

As of 2018, there are 2,820 registered clay artists in Krishnanagar. They work in 675 units. Of late, the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprizes and Textile of the Government of West Bengal has undertaken a number of initiatives through the District Industrial Centre (DIC) to improve their conditions. Registered artists are entitled to get artisan credit cards with which they can get a loan of up to Rs 20,000 from the Indian Overseas Bank for carrying out infrastructural development. - writes Dr. Sandipan Mitra, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Government General Degree College, Lalgarh, West Bengal.

Part II of Dr. Mitra's research article is now published in Kriti Magazine Issue 06, based on his fieldwork in 2018-2019 funded by the Sahapedia-UNESCO Fellowship.

Jamdani as a technique requires skilled weavers. It involves a community of artisans, often a family of weavers, dyers and spinners coordinating with each other. Jamdani weaving is work intensive, especially at Karomi, where the practice is primarily on the technique of hand-picked warp that requires both precision and attention to detail.

Found primarily in villages across Zangskar, Furook is a woollen textile produced by brushing woven cloth until fibres rise from its surface.
The resulting material traps insulating air and provides remarkable protection against winter cold.

Traditionally, it was used to make winter konchas, the long woollen garments worn throughout the region. To describe Furook merely as a textile technique, however, is to overlook the network of relationships from which it emerges.

There is a passionate plea that Sarita and Sarika from Karomi extend to the Indian consumers: it is time to shift our perspective and brand craft as the ultimate status symbol. We willingly pay premiums for global luxury labels because of the narrative, yet we turn to our own heritage and demand discounts. True appreciation begins when we look at cultures where ancient crafts are celebrated as pure luxury and valued accordingly.
