How thin is a solitary thread when weaving Jamdani? How does it glide through the ring so swiftly?

There are many, many details to take into account when dissecting the craft of Jamdani and we thank Deepak ji dearly for joining us at Rare Crafts and bringing them to light.

Its the littlest details that distinguish textile made from the labour of hands; details that we need to respect and emulate when we speak of honest crafts.

We are incredibly thankful to Farhan ji (from Rahi shawl industry ) who joined us at Rare Crafts and brought to light the immensity of details behind the beautiful Pashminaa, as woven in Kashmir.

When we think of archives, we imagine libraries, museums, and shelves filled with old records.
But some archives are woven.

Every handloom carries generations of knowledge—techniques, traditions, regional identities, and stories passed from one pair of hands to the next.

This National Handloom Day, we celebrate not just the fabric, but the living heritage woven into every thread.

Rare Crafts: an initiative by Yaffa Raipur where three of the rarest weaves - Patola, Pashmina, and Jamdani - were brought to the fore.

We spent time with the textiles, understood their various natures and nuances, learnt how to identify and nurture them so they last us a lifetime and then another.

It was heartening to see so many people coming together to celebrate the abundance of traditional handcrafted textiles and reminding us that there is a world of knowledge we often forget to pay attention to, a plethora of crafts worth appreciating.

The way to pursue knowledge is to seek it by asking questions.

This wasn’t the plan.

The sari wasn’t draping the way I intended, so I stopped trying to force it and let it become something else. A modern Kalamkari in a Greek toga silhouette.

Kalamkari has long been a storytelling tradition, with artisans painting scenes from epics onto cloth. Today, many artists are honoring that same centuries-old technique while reinterpreting it through florals, contemporary motifs, and modern design like this saree of mine from Kasturi Kundal

At the same time, Christopher Nolan is bringing Homer’s The Odyssey to a new generation.

It made me wonder…

What if the purpose of tradition isn’t to keep retelling the same stories?

What if its purpose is to give us the courage to tell new ones.

Stories that honor where we came from without carrying the weight of the beliefs, expectations, and limitations those stories sometimes passed down.

Perhaps the greatest tribute to our heritage is not repeating it.

It’s having the courage to rewrite the parts that no longer let us become who we’re meant to be.

Walking along the streets of Dubai and immersing themselves in the history of the city is what our co-founder, Aarushi Katiyar did during her recent visit.

One of the highlights of her trip was the Al Ain Museum— a landmark of history and memory. It was founded in 1969 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to showcase the archaeology and history of Al Ain. Situated east of Al Ain Oasis, in the historic district once known as Harat Al Hosn, the museum is the UAE’s first purpose-built museum and one of its most significant cultural institutions.

Other destinations on her trip included beautiful monuments, the Al Fahidi Neighbourhood, and unforgettable eateries.
