From the Desert Dunes to Your Living Room: The Story of Our Vintage Cushions

Was supposed to take a day off when I got to Barmer from Pushkar, but I just couldn't do it! Instead, I took my bike for a long ride into the desert, which is where I found these beautiful vintage pieces. I was absolutely over the moon.
we cleaned them very carefully and took out the lining since it had rotted. Then, our master tailor, Mangilal, worked his magic once again and turned these pieces into cute cushion covers!

Filled with history and character, these pieces are sure to bring warmth, light, and joy to any living space.

This "Burnt Orange" Mukka-Work patchwork piece is a true labor of patience. It took five years of traveling through the countryside to source vintage fragments that matched perfectly in color and character. Our artisan team then carefully assembled these storied pieces to create a one-of-a-kind work of art, designed to bring warmth and light to your home or the home of a loved one.

Mukka work, also known as Mukke-ka-kam, is a stunning embroidery technique characterised by the couching of gold and silver metallic threads. Mukka, which is the local name for metallic thread wound around a cotton base thread. Both golden and silver mukka threads are used in this embroidery. The work is particularly common among the Sindhi Muslim and Meghwal communities.
The technique involves doubling the metal thread, placing it on the fabric, and then securing it in place with stitches using another thread. The couching is executed with precision to maximise the surface area of the metallic yarn. Other stitches like buttonhole and outline stitches are also used to fill in the design. The artisan sketches the design on the cloth using a black thread for the outline, and attaches a mirror in the centre, surrounded by mukka work.
The final result is a rich piece of embroidery, often featuring geometric designs, zigzag patterns, and stars. The motifs and designs draw inspiration from every day objects and are named accordingly, such as "FUNI" (a sweet), "PATASHA" (a white sugar disc), "CHAUKRI" (courtyard), and "DABBO" (a box).

Namaste 🙏

It is inspiring to see so many of us sharing content Indian textiles. It is completely understandable that we run businesses to make a profit and pay our bills; that is a fundamental right.

However, we must also think about the people on the other end—those we call Artists, but many others simply label as Labor.

For example, techniques like Block print and Kantha are everywhere. But in this day and age, have we stopped to consider how much we are actually paying the people who make our business success possible?

Currently:
• A Block print artist earns only ₹25–₹40 per meter.
• A woman hand-stitching a Quilt receives only ₹150–₹200 for a large piece that takes 3 to 5 days to complete.

Are we truly being ethical toward the people who are the very foundation of our businesses?

Furthermore, there is a significant amount of misleading information circulating about textiles. Indian heritage offers so much more than just these two techniques.

I urge you to take your time and truly research the pieces you are sourcing or commissioning.

Hawa is a third-generation artisan from Barmer, Rajasthan. have known her since she was a baby, watching her stitch alongside her grandmother, Gani Devi. We had the privilege of working with Gani Devi for decades before she passed away.

While Hawa was in Pushkar to meet a client, we decided to have her work on mending and restoring a vintage appliquéd canopy that needs expert attention.

Chuni Devi is an artisan who is the embodiment of women's empowerment When her husband went blind 15 years ago, and subsequently, her son became mentally unstable, she faced immense difficulties. Yet, she has never adopted a victim mindset. Instead, her resilience consistently gives courage to our artisan team and to myself.
Chuni Devi possesses a deep knowledge of forgotten techniques within the handcrafted textile world. While this piece might seem like any other textile we make, it holds the courage that she has sewn into this hand-block-printed quilt.
I have done few projects with her and look forward to doing many more.
Salute to all artisans and humans who deal with various difficulties in everyday life.
