Between the worlds of tradition and reinvention.

Limitless in motion, no hesitation

Echoing our cause for unapologetic loudness is this chequered multi-color Kanchipuram saree. Worn to stand out, the piece is accentuated with a rich gold zari, fascinating thazampoo reku motifs and gentle floral motifs which come together to give this weave a bold, brazen charm.

In the weaver’s workshop, beauty is a careful practice. It tests the artisan’s devotion; it teases the mind. It inks the fingers and slows the hour. While the world admires it at its pinnacle, in this nook, beauty is endured, tended, moulded, and adored before it exists.

Associated with Sri Kalahasti, this Kalamkari cloth, produced between the 19th and 20th century, was likely used as decoration for temple chariots.

As is characteristic of temple art, it is painted with scenes from Mahabharata, laid out in panels in a ‘comic strip' format, and captioned in Telugu.

At the nucleus of it all is a roundel, in which a blue-skinned Lord Vishnu lies on the serpent Ananta, surrounded by guardians, 'dvarapala.' It is likely meant to be the Ranganatha image at Srirangam.
