Shhh... we have the best secrets! 🤫
Everyone knows Crested Butte for the skiing, but did you know it’s actually better without the snow?
We are spilling the tea on why "the Butte" is a summer must-visit:
🌸 Wildflower Royalty: Crested Butte is the Wildflower Capital of Colorado!
🌳 Imagine trekking through the state’s largest aspen grove.
👻 Gothic Vibes & High-Altitude Science: Take a cruise down Forest Road 317 to find Gothic, a historic ghost town with a silver mining history as rich as the mountain views. Today, it’s home to the famous Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, where scientists do incredible research right out of the old historic buildings! Fun fact: The town’s very first mayor was actually decided by a roll of the dice! 🎲 Talk about high stakes.
🛶 Presidents & Paddling: Follow the old stagecoach road—where even Presidents have visited!—to reach Emerald Lake. Keep an eye out for a true local secret: someone has been known to leave a canoe and oars there for anyone to enjoy a quiet row on the water.
⚠️ A Secret to Save Your Life: FR317 is gorgeous, but it has a dark side. Once you hit Emerald Lake, STOP. Just past the lake, a sign warns that only high-clearance 4X4s are allowed before Schofield Pass. 🛑
This turns into Colorado’s most dangerous four-wheel-drive road.
Here is why you shouldn't risk it:
Zero Margin for Error: Some parts have only one foot between your tires and a sheer cliff edge.
The Brake Trap: You have to pass through a stream that soaks your brakes right before you hit a steep cliff descent.
No Turning Back: There are no places to turn around once you're in it.
Many people have unfortunately died by sliding over the edge here.
Stick to the festivals and the flowers—they have much happier endings!
