多摩川の由来は麻。昔武蔵野国の時代に多麻と呼ばれた地域であって、麻の栽培が多く行なわれていた。近くには多摩川が流れているが、多摩川とは麻が多く栽培されている川という意味。実際に川崎市麻生区という地名も残っている。大麻は武蔵野国の特産品であった歴史があり、調布という地名も麻布に関係しているもの。

江戸時代の麻 (Taima-fu)は、灰汁に浸し、臼でつき、繰り返し天日に晒すことで、外皮、木質などの不純物が剥がれ落ち、柔らかくしなやかに、白く輝くような艶を帯びていきます。

Taima-fu h**p cloth of the Edo period is repeatedly soaked in lye, attached with a mortar, and repeatedly exposed to the sun to remove impurities such as wood and its outer skin, giving it a soft, supple, white shining luster.
