永井さんは滞在中、広大な砂漠を車で横切っていて、砂山の向こうに風景に馴染まない物体を見かけました。それが服だと分かったのは、帰国後に報道を目にしたときだったそうです。なぜ南米チリの砂漠の真ん中に、服が置き去りにされているのでしょうか。
脱いだ服が新しい服へと生まれ変わる「服から服へのリサイクル」は、世界全体で1%未満と言われています。それでは残りの99%の服は、どこにいくのでしょうか。
アタカマ砂漠には、世界中から集まった不要な服が大量に廃棄されています。チリは中南米で最大の古着輸入国で、主に欧米、アジアから年間およそ12万トンの中古衣料を輸入しています。北部の都市イキケの免税地区を経由して届く年間5.9万トンのうち、売れずに残った少なくとも3.9万トンが、砂漠に不法投棄・野焼き・放置されています。石油からつくられた合成繊維は、分解に200年はかかると言われています。
同じ砂漠が、遠く離れた国の都市生活を支える資源を送り出し、その国の人々がいらなくなったものを引き受けています。空気が澄んだ夜には肉眼で圧倒的な数の星が見え、その足もとに、土に戻らない服の山があります。

While she was there, driving across the vast desert, Nagai saw something beyond a dune that did not belong in the landscape. Only after returning home, when she came across reports of it, did she realise that what she had seen was clothes. Why is clothing abandoned in the middle of a desert in Chile?
Clothing-to-clothing recycling is said to account for less than 1% worldwide. So where does the other 99% go?
In the Atacama Desert, unwanted clothing gathered from around the world is discarded on an enormous scale. Chile is the largest importer of second-hand clothing in Latin America, taking in roughly 120,000 tonnes a year, mainly from Europe, North America and Asia. Of the 59,000 tonnes that reach the country each year, at least 39,000 tonnes go unsold and are dumped, burned or left in the desert. Synthetic fibres made from petroleum are said to take at least 200 years to break down.
The same desert sends out the resources that support city life in distant countries, and receives what the people of those countries no longer want. On clear nights an overwhelming number of stars can be seen with the naked eye, and beneath them lie mounds of clothing that will never return to the soil.
