Zenpukuji's Giant Tree

Zenpukuji Temple is the oldest temple after Sensoji. Founded by Kuukai in 824, it was originally a Shingon temple. 🗾
Shinran visited the temple in 1232 and brought the temple into the Shinshu sect. According to the legend, when he planted his staff in the ground it grew in a Giant Ginkgo tree. 🌳
It's believed to be around 750 years old!!!😱

鳥居

神社などになぜ鳥居があるのか、それは神域と人の世界を区別する結界の役割をしており、神域への入り口とされています。

日本の鳥居は朱色のものがありますが、これは魔除けなどの意味もあるため地の色に近い朱色が使われています。

海外でも日本の鳥居に似ているものがありますが、日本の鳥居が神域への入り口だと思わず頷いてしまうような事例があります。

数々の自然災害や戦争などで周囲は壊滅しても鳥居だけは倒れない事実があり、海外のメディアでも取り上げられました。

建築方法は特別な建て方をしているわけでもなく、材料もごく普通の材料を使っているのには驚きます。

Torii

Why are there torii in Japan? They divide the human and the divine worlds and are a doors of Shinto shrines.

Some torii have no colour but sometimes they are colored vermilion as a protection from evil spirits.

There are things similar to torii in other countries too but without knowing that Japanese torii are portals to a superior world most of the people just nod and walk away.

Even natural disasters and wars that destroyed everything in the proximity of torii couldn`t take down themselves and this fact was covered by foreign media too.

What is surprising is that they are made not with a special construction method, or using special materials.

Shinsengumi, Okita Souji

Shinsengumi is the organization formed but the swordsmen working as bodyguards when the Sh**un moved to the capital in 1863.

Among the top three Shinsengumi members was Tennen Rishin`s specialist Okita Souji.

Tennen Rishin used ridiculously think and heavy wood swords and during trainings simulating real battles acquired the necessary force to control their sword. Okita Souji was so skilled that he was able to master a technique made of three fast strikes that looked like one. It was called Sandanzuki (which translates as "Three Piece Thrust").

Okita Souji was working as an assassin to stop Shinsengumi internal strifes but he had to leave his job in his 20s because of an incurable disease.

His beloved sword was a 'Kikuichimonji Norimune', a katana rumored to be as valuable as a national treasure however it is not certain whether it actually existed or not.

新撰組　沖田総司

1863年に当時の将軍が京に向かう時、警護のために集められた剣客達が後に組織したのが新撰組です。

その新撰組の中でも三本の指に入る強さを持っていたとされるのが、天然理心流の沖田総司です。

天然理心流では異様に太く重い木刀を使い、実戦を想定した修練を行うことで刀を自在にコントロールする力を身につけたとされており、沖田総司は高い能力から三本繰り出す突きがあまりの速さで一本に見える「三段突き」を会得したと言われています。

沖田総司は新撰組内での内部抗争で暗殺者として動いたりとしましたが、当時不治の病であった結核により20代前半という若さでこの世を去りました。

尚、愛刀は「菊一文字則宗」とされていますが、当時でも国宝級の価値がある刀のため真偽のほどはわかりません。

Ise Grand Shrine

The most important shrine of Japan is the 2000 year old shrine located in Ise City Mie Prefecture and called Ise Grand Shrine.

Its formal definition is “shrine” an it is composed by a inner shrine that houses the Amaterasu the supreme deity out of 8000 deities, the ancestor of the emperor； and two outer shrines with the deities that administer Amaterasu`s meals but inside its perimeter there are other 125 buildings.

Among them there are a total of 14 associated shrines (inner and outer) and every 20 years there is a transfer ceremony to move the deities from the old shrines into newly built ones.

The transfer ceremony preserves the main shrine beauty and purity and has the purpose of passing on the traditional job of constructing temples to the next generation.

Ise Shrine is spacious, the atmosphere created by trees and torii interweaving is solemn. It is a space filled with power, you have to visit it.

伊勢神宮

日本で神社のトップとされるのが、約2000年前から三重県伊勢市に鎮座する伊勢神宮です。

正式名称は「神宮」と言い、八百万神々の最高神である天皇祖先の天照大御神
を御祭神とする「内宮」と、天照大御神の食事を司る神をまつった「外宮」の２つを中心に１２５社があります。

その中でも内宮・外宮と関わりの深い14の別宮では20年に一度、新しく社殿を新築して神様の引越しをする式年遷宮という儀式を行います。

式年遷宮には常に社殿を美しく清浄に保つのと、社殿を建てる職人「宮大工」の伝統技術を次の世代に継承する意味があるそうです。

伊勢神宮はとても広く、木々や鳥居が織りなす雰囲気は非常に荘厳で、パワーに満ちた空間ですので、皆さんも是非行かれてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Joya no Kane

Joya no Kane is one of the Buddhist functions for the New Year.

From New Year`s Eve 0 am (called Oomisoka) bells are hit 180 times. This ritual has been adopted from China`s Song dynasty.

If you wonder why the number is 108, it is because in Buddhism there are 108 klesha (human afflictions). The aim is to purify people from evil passions such as lust, wrath, obsession, jealousy, etc..

Temples` bells are called Bonsho (temple bell) and are important Buddhist ritual implements. Their clear sound echoes in the quiet of the night.

In Japan,, if you liste to Joya no Kane you will think back on the last year and stay hopeful for the new year.

除夜の鐘

除夜の鐘は日本仏教で年末に行われる行事の一つです。

12月31日の大晦日の深夜から０時を挟む時間帯に108回撞かれますが、中国から宋代に伝わった習慣のようです。

なぜ108回撞かれるかというと、仏教では人間には百八つの煩悩があるとされており欲望、怒り、執着、猜疑などを祓うためとされています。

お寺にある鐘は梵鐘と呼ばれる仏具のうちの重要な一つで、澄んだ音は深夜の静寂に響き渡ります。

日本では除夜の鐘が聞こえてくることで一年を振り返り、新しい年に希望を持ちます。

Fuhonsen

The most ancient Japanese coins are Fuhonsen, silver coins are estimated to have been created in 638. It was the common opinion that they weren`t used as normal money but were instead “magic silver”.

In fact, Japan's first circulated coinage was believed to be Wadokaichin but after the lucky discoveries made at the ruins of Asakaike and the following research, Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties announced that “chances Fuhonsen were the first money in circulation in Japan are extremely high”.

During a TV show that discusses antiquities it was estimated that one fuhonsen value was probably about 10,000,000 yen.

富本銭（フホンセン）

日本最古の貨幣は富本銭と言うもので638年頃に日本で作られたと推定される銀貨ですが、これは普通に使われるお金ではなく「まじない銭」とされていました。

日本最古の通貨は和同開珎（ワドウカイチン）とされていましたが、飛鳥池遺跡から発見されたことを機に様々な調査結果に基づいて、奈良国立文化財研究所が「富本銭は、わが国最初の流通貨幣である可能性が極めて高い」と発表しました。

骨董などを鑑定するテレビ番組で、富本銭1枚に1,000万円の値段が付いたことでも注目を集めました。

Legendary Japanese Swords

It is said that traditional Japanese katana originated in Iwate`s Mogusa Sanctuary.
In the past, in Mogusa Sanctuary there lived a group of sword-smiths who were highly esteemed by Kyoto`s noble families.

The five katana listed below are the Tengagoken (five legendary katana):

・Juzumaru Tsunetsugu
・Mizazuki Munechika
・Doujikiri Yasutsuna
・Onimaru Kunitsuna
・Ookanehira

Especially this last one, Ookanekira, was a masterpiece among Japanese katana that the chief of Bihin and Okayama Domain defined “ the sword that can change an entire country”.

Muramasa blades are magical swords that are said to carry a curse against Tokugawa family.
・The one that killed Ieyasu`s father
・The one that wounded Ieyasus`s father
・The one that executed Ieyasu`s eldest son after a crime
・The one that killed Iesasu`s wife
・The one that wounded Ieyasu himself during a battle
・The ones that were used to assault Tokugawa troops
Muramasa swords were involved with all these incidents.

伝説の日本刀

日本刀の源流は岩手県の儛草神社（もぐさじんじゃ）にあると言われています。
儛草神社は古代に刀鍛冶の集団が住んでおり、儛草で作られた刀は蕨手刀（わらびてとう）といわれ、京の都の貴族たちも珍重していました。

以下は天下五剣と言われている日本刀です。

・数珠丸恒次 ジュズマルツネツグ
・三日月宗近 ミカヅキムネチカ
・童子切安綱 ドウジキリヤスツナ
・鬼丸国綱 オニマルクニツナ
・大包平 オオカネヒラ

特に大包平は日本刀中の代表作で、備前岡山藩主が「一国に替え難い」と言った名刀です。

他にも徳川家を祟った妖刀と言われる村正作の刀があり、
・ 徳川家康の祖父殺害
・ 家康の父が負傷
・ 嫡男が死罪
・ 妻が殺害
・ 家康本人が戦いで負傷
・ 徳川本陣を急襲され投げつけられた刀
この全ての出来事に村正が使われました。
