How to Make a Traditional Japanese Zabuton Cushion

For Standard 55 × 59 cm (21.5 × 23 inch) Zabuton Covers

Traditional Japanese zabuton cushions are designed for sitting comfortably on the floor around a low table. While ready-made zabuton inserts can be difficult to find outside Japan, making your own is surprisingly easy.
Option 1: Polyester Fiber Fill (Recommended)
The simplest method is to make a cushion similar to a large pillow.
Materials
• Polyester fiberfill (available from fabric and craft stores)
• Cotton fabric for an inner liner (optional)
• Needle and thread or sewing machine
Instructions
1 Sew a simple fabric bag measuring approximately 55 × 59 cm.
2 Fill with polyester fiberfill until firm but comfortable.
3 Sew the opening closed.
4 Insert into your zabuton cover.
For a traditional thickness, aim for approximately 8–12 cm (3–5 inches) when compressed.

Option 2: Quilt Batting Layers (Most Traditional)
Traditional Japanese zabuton are often made from multiple layers of cotton batting.
Materials
• Cotton quilt batting
• Cotton fabric for outer liner
Instructions
1 Cut multiple layers of batting to approximately 55 × 59 cm.
2 Stack layers until desired thickness is achieved.
3 Wrap in a cotton liner.
4 Stitch through the layers in several places to prevent shifting.
5 Insert into the zabuton cover.
This method creates a flatter, firmer cushion similar to those commonly used in Japan.

Option 3: Recycled Materials
Many people make zabuton cushions from materials already available at home.
Suitable fillings include:
• Old towels
• Blankets
• Bed sheets
• Cotton clothing
• Quilt remnants
Fold the materials neatly and place them inside a simple fabric liner before inserting into the cover.

$50.00

Bring back the simple pleasures of a Japanese summer with this charming vintage hand-cranked kakigōri (shaved ice) maker. Styled after the colourful ice shavers found at summer festivals and neighbourhood sweet shops, it is both a practical kitchen tool and a delightful piece of Japanese nostalgia.

Manufactured by Doushisha during the 1990s, this sturdy manual machine creates light, fluffy shaved ice without the need for electricity. Simply place a block of ice in the upper chamber, set a bowl beneath, and turn the handle to produce refreshing shaved ice ready for your favourite syrups, fruit toppings, condensed milk, or matcha.

Oni Kabuto (鬼かぶと) Ramie Tapestry US $260.00
This magnificent Oni Kabuto (鬼かぶと) tapestry is an heirloom-quality work of textile art handcrafted in Kyoto, Japan's ancient cultural capital.

Woven from heavy, hand-crafted ramie linen, the cloth is first dyed in rich natural indigo before skilled artisans carefully apply gold accents to the design. The result is a striking combination of deep blue and shimmering gold that creates a powerful yet elegant impression.

The central motif is a traditional samurai kabuto (helmet). For centuries, kabuto imagery has symbolized protection, courage, strength, and healthy growth. It is especially associated with Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi) on May 5th, when families display samurai-themed decorations and helmets to express their hopes for a boy's safe and prosperous future.

Unlike mass-produced wall décor, this tapestry is created using traditional Kyoto textile techniques passed down through generations. The substantial weight of the ramie fabric, the depth of the indigo dyeing, and the meticulous detailing make it a genuine work of Japanese craftsmanship suitable for display in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Whether displayed in a tokonoma alcove, entrance hall, living room, study, or office, this impressive piece brings an unmistakable touch of Japanese culture and refinement to any space.
