Nanakorobi Yaoki Daruma Chūsen-Dyed Linen Japanese Noren Curtain

Fall seven times, rise eight.

The Japanese saying Nanakorobi Yaoki celebrates perseverance—the determination to rise again after every setback.

Seven wonderfully expressive red Daruma tumble and balance across this naturally textured linen noren. Each has its own personality, yet all share the Daruma’s enduring association with resilience, good health and protection from misfortune.

Created in Kyoto using traditional chūsen resist dyeing, it is an auspicious design with warmth, humour and a quietly encouraging spirit.

VTG Japanese Sensu Folding Fan Nasu Eggplant Artist Signed Bamboo Beaded Cord

A quiet little piece of Japan for everydayA quiet little piece of Japan for everyday life. 🍆
This beautifully made Japanese sensu (扇子) features a wonderfully simple nasu — eggplant — design painted on warm ivory paper. The composition is signed and sealed by the artist, with finely pierced bamboo ribs and a delicate cord finished with a clear bead.
At 21.8 cm long with a generous 39.5 cm (15½") open spread, it is slightly larger than many sensu and has a particularly elegant presence when opened.
Beautiful enough to display, but made to be used — and there are still plenty of warm days ahead before autumn really arrives in Japan.

Vintage Japanese Brocade Buddhist Sutra Book Cover

A Beautiful Cover for a Traditional Japanese Sutra

This richly woven Japanese Buddhist sutra book cover is designed for a kyōhon (経本) — the traditional books used for Buddhist sutras and chanting.
The exterior features an elaborate brocade design in deep indigo, warm brown and gold, with traditional cloud motifs and a prominent mitsuba-aoi (three hollyhock leaf) crest.

Unlike a Western dust jacket, the cloth cover has pockets inside each end. The front and back covers of the kyōhon slip into these pockets, protecting the book while allowing all of the pages to remain completely free for reading.

A lovely piece of traditional Japanese Buddhist textile work — beautiful whether used for its original purpose or appreciated as a decorative and cultural object.

Size: 24 × 16 cm (9½ × 6¼ in) closed

Japanese Nihongami Hair Styling Set Essentials Set: Ketabo, Mottoi, Bintsuke

Traditional Nihongami Hair Styling — The Essential Tools 🇯🇵
Creating traditional Japanese nihongami requires some very specialized materials — many of which have changed remarkably little over generations.
This set brings together three essentials used by professional Japanese hair stylists:
Ketabo (毛たぼ) — fine synthetic hair fibre used to build volume and shape within traditional hairstyles, including the distinctive momoware associated with Maiko.
Mottoi / Motoyui (元結) — extremely fine, stiff hair ties used to bind and secure sections of the hairstyle. The set includes 60 pieces: 20 each in red, white and black.
Bintsuke (鬢付け) — traditional Japanese hair styling wax used to smooth, shape and control the hair or wig. This is Kansai Tokoyama #9, a versatile hardness suitable for general nihongami styling.
These aren't reproductions made to look traditional — they are the actual working materials used by professional nihongami stylists in Japan.

Warm, Comfortable and Quintessentially Japanese 🇯🇵
If you’ve ever stayed at a traditional Japanese ryokan, you’ll probably know the nemaki (寝巻) — the simple cotton garment worn for relaxing, sleeping, wandering down to the onsen… and sometimes strolling around a hot-spring town.
Nemaki literally means sleepwear. Although it resembles a casual yukata and can certainly be worn as a robe, in Japan it is really a traditional form of pyjama.
For the colder months there is an especially cosy version: the cotton flannel nemaki.
These aren’t thick Western-style bathrobes. They’re made from soft, pyjama-weight brushed cotton — warm enough for autumn and winter while remaining comfortable to sleep in. Some even have an extra gauze lining around the upper body.
Vintage winter nemaki also came in a wonderful variety of prints: checks, geometric designs, florals, indigo, burgundy, pink, purple and more.
We have a collection of unused vintage Japanese flannel nemaki, many still with their original labels and tags — everyday pieces of Showa-era Japanese life that somehow survived unworn.
Made to be worn. Made to be slept in. Made in Japan.
Warm, comfortable and quintessentially Japanese.
