『Jackman（ジャックマン）』とはタナベメリヤスの創業者 田辺貢の魂を受け継いだ福井県発祥のファクトリーブランドです。戦後アメリカンスポーツに憧れ脱サラし工場を設立。アイデアマンとして次々と新たな技術を生み出します。見栄をはることで豊かな心を得たいーそんな思いが裏にはありました。

■田辺メリヤス（Tanabe Meias）
1949年3月、福井県武生市。田邊 貢が田邊莫大小製作所を創業。八畳一間に横編み機3台という、ささやかなビジネスのスタートだった。同年、戦後初の日米親善野球試合が開催され、アメリカから3Aのサンフランシスコ・シールズが来日。試合を観戦した貢はシールズ選手達の足元に目を奪われる。1950年、田邊莫大小製作所は日本初の一体型足掛け野球用ストッキング製造をスタート。アイデアマンでもあった貢は、独自のデザインを完成させるためにミシンのカスタムや新たな縫製技術を次々に開発していった。1954年、ストッキングが福井県知事賞を、翌年には発明協会近畿地区特賞を受賞。また10年間にわたり全国高校野球選手権大会（甲子園）に出場する全チーム、全選手にストッキングを寄贈し「田邊莫大小製作所の製品＝高品質」というイメージが定着していった。1962年に高松宮殿下より全国発明賞を受賞してからはスポーツアパレル全般を開発し、1964年の東京オリンピックでは日本選手団のトレーニングウェアを提供するまでに成長することとなった。

In March, 1949, Mitsugu Tanabe established Tanabe Meias in Takefu-city, Fukui. It was a small business start with three weft knitting machines in the space of 134 square feet. In the same year, the first Japan-U.S. friendly baseball game after the war was held, and San Francisco Seals of 3A came to Japan. While Mitsugu was watching the game, Seals players’ feet grabbed his attention. In 1950, Tanabe Meias started manufacturing all-in-one foot hanging baseball stockings. Mitsugu, known as an idea man, continuously customized sewing machines and developed sewing techniques in order to complete the original design. In 1954, their stockings were awarded the Fukui prefectural governor prize, and the Kinki area special prize from Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation in the next year. For 10 years, they had donated their stockings to all the players from all the teams who participated in Japan’s National High School Baseball Tournament (Koshien), and it resulted in the image “Products of Tanabe Meias = High quality”. After they received the National Commendation for Invention from His Highness Prince Takamatsu in 1962, they developed general sports apparel, and grew to one of the sponsors who supplied Japan’s national team with training wears at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
