Somali is one of many languages living on our cards and, lately, one of the loudest in our comments.

Solomon's Sayings and Selamta Cards both feature a Somali phrase of affection, alongside Amharic, Arabic, and four others on the same piece. No language gets top billing here. Each one gets the same hand-lettering, the same beadwork, the same attention, whether it's read by one person or a thousand.

Asmara has more Italian Art Deco buildings than most Italian cities.

Eritrea's capital earned UNESCO World Heritage status for a skyline of 1930s modernist architecture. Cinemas, petrol stations, and whole city blocks are built like nowhere else on the continent.

Tigrinya is the language spoken across that city and Ethiopia's Tigray region, sharing roots with Amharic's Ge'ez script but carrying its own rhythm entirely.

Some souvenirs sit in a drawer. This one you carry every day.

The Beloved City Bag is built from three countries at once: Kenya's cotton canvas holding its shape, Tanzania's kanga print lining the inside like a hidden secret, Ethiopian leather at the handles for the wear and tear of an actual life.

The first word this shop ever spoke was Amharic, one of the oldest scripts still written today, and still the language this store dreams in.

Long before most calendars existed, Oromo astronomers were already mapping the sky.

The Borana Oromo built a lunar-stellar calendar centuries ago, tracking star and moon cycles with a precision most of the ancient world hadn't caught up to yet. Afaan Oromo is Ethiopia's most widely spoken language today, carried by the country's largest community, and it's been sitting on our shelves the whole time. Solomon's Sayings holds it in bead and leather, an Oromo line of affection next to six other languages on the same piece. Selamta Cards holds the paper version, smaller, quieter, made for slipping into someone's bag before they notice.

Try holding habibti in English for a second. My beloved gets close, but never quite lands the same. That's the whole reason it survives every border it crosses. Yenay Konjo has the same problem in Amharic. Diaspora families have been saying both for generations down long-distance calls, in voice notes, scrawled at the bottom of letters because some feelings just don't survive translation, so people kept the original word instead.

We're calling this one The Words We Carry. Selamta Cards and Solomon's Sayings hold the words in ink and bead, small enough to slip into a bag before someone notices. The Upendo bag adds another love, in Kiswahili, because apparently two languages still weren't enough to hold it.
