Lebanese Folklore
A bourgeois perspective that defined Lebanese traditional clothing starting with Evelyne Bustros that pioneered the 'costume orientaux' in relation to Lebanon's folkloric identiy from the late 30s .
First photo circa 1940s and the rest high society women from the 60s.
The influence was from 19th century Lebanon heavily influenced with Ottoman aesthetics blended with local style and unique pieces like the conical tantour headdress.
In the 60s, high society women were obsessed with dressup parties and galas wearing the Tantour.

Lebanese Folklore from a set of low quality prints in 1960s black and white magazine, colorized to bring the history alive.
In the 60s Lebanese folkore played a major role and today through this platform it lives again. Beautiful 60s interpretation of 19th century Lebanese historical fashions with the tantour headdress.

In 1972, in collaboration with the Lebanese Minitsry of Tourism and MEA; the Italian fashion magazine Confezione Italiana brought a team of Italian models to Sidon for a remarkable fashion editorial set against one of Lebanon's most iconic landmarks: the Sea Castle.

Published during the golden age of Lebanon, the story presented Sidon not simply as a historic city, but as a destination where Mediterranean glamour, ancient heritage, and contemporary fashion could coexist. The result was a striking series of photographs that blended 1970s Italian fashion with the timeless backdrop of one of the oldest Phoenician cities in the world.

Looking back today, some of the poses feel intensely dramatic, reflecting the visual language of European fashion photography at the time. Yet what makes this editorial truly fascinating is its portrayal of Lebanon itself. Long before social media and destination campaigns, international magazines were already using Lebanese landmarks, archaeological sites, and coastal cities as settings for high-fashion storytelling.

These rare archival images offer a glimpse into Sidon, Lebanese heritage, vintage fashion photography, and a period when Lebanon was celebrated internationally as the "Garden of the Middle East."

From tailored waistcoats to the wide zannar (silk waistband) to the quintessential sherwel pants, this carousel pays tribute to the golden age of Lebanese fashion history and the distinctive fusion of Eastern and Western influences that shaped Lebanese style in the early 1900s.

Inside Al Mawed, one of the Arab world’s most influential entertainment magazines founded by Badih Serbey in 1953, with its very first issue created as a wedding gift to his wife Nadia Salam, I was welcomed by Karim Chehab, the grandson safeguarding this remarkable archive and its living memory.

Among decades of preserved photographs, film reels, negatives, and documents, we uncovered the story behind the legendary gown designed by Lebanese couturier Joseph Harouni, worn by Lebanese icon Sabah at the Cannes Film Festival 1959 alongside Egyptian dancer and actress Samia Gamal.

A moment when Lebanese fashion stood on one of the world’s greatest stages and, thanks to Al Mawed’s extraordinary preservation, continues to live far beyond memory and into history.
