Meet a Primary Education Advisor(PEA) with Two Degrees, Now a Master's Graduate from UNIMA

In Malawi, a Primary Education Advisor(PEA) is often seen as someone who rose through the ranks with a teaching certificate and years of classroom experience.

But Benedicto Melamela's story refuses to sit in that ordinary box.

From Kasipa Zone in Nkhotakota, where he now serves as a Primary Education Advisor, his journey stretches back over two decades, to a time when he entered the profession not with prestige, but with purpose, starting out as a temporary teacher.

He later trained at Lilongwe Teachers' Training College, earning his T2 Certificate, and Ministry of Education posted him to Kanyenda Zone in Nkhotakota. His dedication soon set him apart, earning him a leadership role as Headteacher at Dwangwa Primary School.

But for Benedicto, standing still was never an option.

Behind the titles and responsibilities, there was a quiet hunger, a desire to learn more, to become more. His attempts to join Domasi College of Education did not succeed, but instead of giving up, he found another path.

He enrolled with TEEM, pursuing theological studies, and in 2014, he obtained a Diploma. Still pressing forward, he advanced to University of Livingstonia - UNILIA, earning a University Certificate of Education.

For many, that would have been enough.

But not for Benedicto.

He kept climbing.

At Zomba Theological University, he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity in 2018. Soon after, he joined the Catholic University of Malawi, where he pursued and completed a Bachelor's Degree in (Education) Languages in 2020.

Each qualification was not just a certificate, it was a step, a statement, a refusal to be limited.

Along the way, he also served in secondary education at Majiga CDSS, before eventually being appointed as a Primary Education Advisor,a role where many stop growing academically.

But he did not.

Driven by a deep desire to reach the highest levels of education, he enrolled with the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to pursue a Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching Studies (Social Studies).

Balancing leadership, work, and studies was not easy. It demanded discipline, sacrifice, and resilience.

And yet, he endured.

On 29th April 2026, Benedicto Melamela reached a milestone few in his position achieve, he graduated with a Master's Degree.

Today, he stands not just as a Primary Education Advisor, but as a symbol of continuous growth, proof that no matter where you start, you can keep rising.

And even now, he is not done.

With his eyes set on a PhD, he continues the journey, still climbing, still learning, still becoming.

A story that challenges limits… and redefines what is possible.

Congratulations 👏

Morning yesterday, I thought of going to Blantyre.
First question,,,do I have fuel?
Answer: NO 😂
So I said let me pass through Nkango and refuel.
On the way I was greeting friends, then they told me: Palibe mafuta chief, ma filling station onse Ali dry.
That’s when I decided to try black market koma guys😂🙌🏾 K12,000 per litre 😭
But since what I was going to do was important, I still bought,,,
Imagine I bought 1 litre yokha😂😂
Convincing myself that I will refuel in Limbe, what a lie 🤦‍♂️

I started the journey
Reached MUST junction (Malowa), I found a lot of people looking for transport to Limbe.
They even stopped me thinking I’m a Kabaza guy 😂
At first nnakana,,,then I said wait,,,business is business 😌
So yesterday,,,I was officially a Kabaza guy 😂😂
As I continued, I saw many people along the road looking for transport, that’s when I knew kuti we are cooked😭
I only saw one filling station with fuel… but the line?
Hundreds of cars and motorcycles 😳
No chance for me.
By the grace of God, I managed to reach home using that same 1 litre from black market (Ye khristu)🙏

But honestly,,,
Prices have gone up, yes.
But why it’s so scarce?
Someone should explain to me.
This automatic pricing thing, is it really helping us? 🤔

Anyway… before I slept, I called my crush 😌
I explained everything that happened and then asked her: What do you chapangitsa kuti fuel akwere chotere mtengo?
I waited kuti andiyankhe😂
Thought maybe it’s network problem,,,
Then all I heard was,,,
Aaah… aaah😭😂
Now it’s on you guys,,,
Should I continue or just accept friendship? 😂

FUEL PRICES UP BY 41%. HOW DID WE
REACH HERE?

This fuel price increase is now everywhere in Malawi. But beyond the anger, one important question is rarely asked: how did we reach a 41% increase at once?

Malawi does not produce fuel. We import it, and its cost is affected by things we do not fully control, such as global fuel prices, the exchange rate, and transport costs. This means the real cost of fuel keeps changing, even when pump prices remain the same.

MERA says fuel pricing follows the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM). Under APM, fuel prices are supposed to adjust automatically when the real cost of fuel goes up or down by more than ±5%. This is meant to allow small, regular adjustments instead of large shocks.

However, for some time, fuel prices were kept under a fixed pricing regime, where prices stayed unchanged despite rising import costs. When prices are fixed for too long, the difference between the real cost and the pump price does not disappear but rather it builds up. When correction finally comes, it happens all at once, as we are seeing now.

This explanation does not justify the hardship people are facing. It simply explains the path that led us here.

What do you think about this system? How should Malawi manage fuel pricing while also protecting ordinary citizens from such heavy increases? Share your thoughts and possible solutions.

To my fellow youths, let’s push harder in 2026. Let’s hustle more and stay focused. I strongly believe it will be a great year.
