Zikomo Bags is a social entrepreneurship project based in Lilongwe, Malawi. The host of the project, the Rainbow Centre for HIV/AIDS Home Based Care, is a community centre that provides many services to assist those vulnerable to and affected by HIV/AIDS. A group of volunteers from the Centre, have taken the initiative to create a social enterprise known as Zikomo Bags. Through collective skill sh
aring workshops, they have learned to sew and run a business. Using traditional material (known as chitenge) purchased at the local market, they create Zikomo Bags. The ultimate goal of this project has been to offer the women participating new skills and the ability to be financially independent. The women also share a portion of the sales with the Rainbow Centre.
'Zikomo' means 'thank you' in Chichewa, a language spoken in Malawi.
