It is my personal opinion that there are two kinds of quilters in the world. Pattern first quilters and fabric first quilters. Pattern first quilters decide on the quilt design they want to make and then search for the perfect fabrics to execute the design. Fabric first quilters fall in love with the fabric they want to use and then find or design a pattern to fit the fabrics. I am a fabric first quilter. In the case of the pixel bird I endeavored to make a quilt out of my collection of
designer solids. Solids busts the doors of possibility wide open because the pieces can be small and I don’t have to consider texture or directionality. 1 inch squares seemed like a great way to explore thousands of tiny pieces where the color placement of each piece really made the whole quilt. I had seen some really amazing pixel based design floating around in the world and wanted to try my hand at it. I love the idea of a very tactile and physical craft being used to interpret a digital concept. These two things being real contradictions of each other. I also loved the added conceptual layer of that digital language being used to express a concept in nature.
