Clothes Swap meets have always been upheld in the past as all kinds of events like festivals and parties. Before the pandemic, there have been a few successful swap meets that have happened which resulted in a decrease of textile waste which aids in the cause of protecting and caring for the environment. Our Letās swap team have discovered a few clothes swapping communities that share the same goals as us; raising awareness towards clothes swapping and reducing fashion waste.
Swapholic, a Singapore based clothes swap team have held many swap meets that worked out just fine. From what weāve gathered, they have been very successful in getting people to participate in their events. All the participants have to do is to bring clothes that could match the quality of the products that have been displayed which are waiting to be distributed to fellow clothes swappers.
The participants are also able to gain points which could aid them in receiving the clothes that they want in the swap event. Not only do they distribute clothes for the participants to swap with but also accessories such as jewelleries and handbags. Their main audience is mostly women but there have been men who have also gotten involved in their swap meets.
Next up, we have the clothes swap community called āThe Clothing Exchangeā which is Australian based. One of their aims which is to keep garments in use for a longer period as an efficient way to reduce environmental impact, have inspired our team to spread the word and help them achieve their goals which are quite similar to the āSwapholicā teamās. With a clear goal in mind, this community had taken Melbourne by storm with their clothes swap festival at the Plaza Block Party on March 14th last year. Both of these communities are still continuing their mission to get people to join in this eco-friendly act online through various platforms such as Youtube, instagram and etc.
As we went through the photos and captions that both of these teams have uploaded on their instagram account, we have observed that these swap meets have helped people bond with each other and some of them even stayed friends for a long time period. We hope that someday, all of us will be able to attend clothes swap meets or events soon.
