WHAT I’M BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT PATTERN DRAFTING

The more I learn and practice pattern drafting, the more I realize that it is not just about memorizing formulas.

It is about understanding why.

Why is this line placed here?
Why do we divide this measurement?
Why do we add this allowance?
Why does changing one point affect another part of the garment?

At first, you may simply follow the steps because that is what you were taught.

But as you begin to understand the reason behind those steps, something changes.

You start looking at a garment differently.

Instead of thinking, “I don’t know the formula for this,” you begin to think, “I understand what I need to achieve. Now, how do I get there?”

And I think that is where real learning begins.

Whether it is pattern drafting or freehand sewing, I don't just want to know how to make a garment.

I want to understand why it works.

Because when you understand the why, you are no longer just following a method.

You are learning the craft.

WHAT DO YOU WISH SOMEONE HAD TAUGHT YOU?

If you could go back to the very beginning of your sewing journey, what is one thing you wish someone had taught you from day one?

For me, I’m learning that sewing is so much more than putting fabric under a machine.

There’s fit, measurements, pattern drafting, fabric behaviour, construction, and understanding the body.

Sometimes we learn by making mistakes, correcting them, and trying again.

YOUR SEWING MACHINE IS NOT THE PROBLEM 👀✂️

Let me tell you something…

Sometimes that dress is not fitting badly because your sewing machine is misbehaving. 😂

And no, it’s not always because the fabric is “stubborn.” 😭

The problem may have started before you even touched your sewing machine.

If your measurements are wrong,
if your pattern is wrong,
if you don't understand ease,
if you don't account for the shape of the body…

You can sew with the most expensive machine in the world and that garment can still fit badly. 🫠

Good sewing starts before the sewing machine.

It starts with understanding the body.

It starts with taking accurate measurements.

It starts with knowing how to transfer those measurements into a pattern.

And it continues with proper cutting and construction.

That's why I'm getting more intentional about pattern drafting.

Because I don't just want to sew clothes.

I want to understand WHY they fit. 🔥

And that, my fellow creatives, is a completely different level of sewing.

FROM IDEA TO GARMENT ✂️✨

Good morning, creatives! ❤️

There is a stage in every designer’s journey where you have so many beautiful ideas in your head, but you look at your paper and say…

“Abeg, how do I even draw this thing?” 😂😭

I know that feeling!

But guess what? You don’t have to remain there.

I want to grow from simply admiring beautiful designs to being able to look at an idea in my head and say:

“Okay… I know how to turn this into a pattern.” 🧵✂️

That is the journey I’m starting.

From idea → sketch → pattern → fabric → finished garment.

And I’m especially excited because we’re going to be creating some MAD designs together! 🔥

So if you’re also learning fashion, remember:

You may not know how to do it today, but that doesn’t mean you won’t master it tomorrow.

Keep learning.
Keep practising.
Keep creating.

One day, that design living in your head will become the garment hanging in front of you. ❤️
