Reading through the comment section and I'm just tired. Who were those complaining of expensive burial rites? Now everyone is in support of big parties. It's alright.
The Anambra State Government, Charles Chukwuma Soludo has enacted a strict burial law to stop extravagant funeral practices and reduce financial pressure on bereaved families. The legislation enforces one-day, weekend-only burials and regulates condolence gifts, wake-keeps, and public displays of the deceased.
According to the law, All burials must take place only on a Saturday, stating that Burials from Monday to Friday are strictly prohibited.
He said:
" All burial and funeral ceremonies must be completed within a single day"
Still on its stand, the law stated traditional wake-keep ceremonies have been abolished entirely, saying that all vigil masses and services of songs must end by 9:00 PM, and no food, drinks, live bands, or cultural entertainment are allowed during the evening event.
According to the state government, the law is intended to remove financial burden and pressure on bereaved families and to curb oppressive practices during burials. The law also warns against the blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies.
The law also strictly abolished the presentation of expensive items like cows, goats, and bags of rice during condolence visit saying it's illegal. He added that Condolence gifts are now strictly limited to money, one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer, and one crate of soft drinks.
It added that printing and posters of billboards, banners,of the deceased anywhere in the state is strictly prohibited and that anyone who violates these rules will face a penalty of a N100,000 fine and a six month imprisonment, or both.
