TENSION IN CALABAR AS AKAMKPA YOUTHS REJECT APC CHAPTER CHAIRMAN NOMINATION
There is growing tension in CALABAR cross river state, following strong reactions from concerned youths of over the reported nomination of Mr. Abandego Ete-Fia Okon as the Chapter Chairman of the (APC) in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
In a statement made available to journalists, the youths expressed deep dissatisfaction with the alleged endorsement of Abandego Ete-Fia Okon, insisting that he is not an indigene of Akamkpa and therefore should not be imposed on the people as party chairman. According to them, such a move undermines the political integrity, unity, and identity of the local government.
The group described the nomination as “totally unacceptable,” alleging that it disregards qualified sons and daughters of Akamkpa who have labored for the growth and stability of the party at the grassroots level. They further warned that any attempt to impose a candidate without proper consultation could create internal division and weaken the party’s chances in future elections.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the youth leaders stated that Akamkpa is not for sale and that leadership positions within the local chapter must reflect the will and interest of the people. He called on party stakeholders and elders to reconsider the decision and allow a transparent and inclusive process that respects the rights of bona fide indigenes.
The protesting youths also appealed to the state leadership of the APC to intervene swiftly to prevent escalation of tensions. They maintained that their agitation is peaceful but resolute, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the political future of Akamkpa.
As of the time of filing this report, party officials have yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
Observers note that how the situation is handled in the coming days may significantly impact party cohesion in Akamkpa and beyond.
