TENSION IN CALABAR AS AKAMKPA YOUTHS REJECT APC CHAPTER CHAIRMAN NOMINATION

There is growing tension in CALABAR cross river state, following strong reactions from concerned youths of over the reported nomination of Mr. Abandego Ete-Fia Okon as the Chapter Chairman of the (APC) in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

In a statement made available to journalists, the youths expressed deep dissatisfaction with the alleged endorsement of Abandego Ete-Fia Okon, insisting that he is not an indigene of Akamkpa and therefore should not be imposed on the people as party chairman. According to them, such a move undermines the political integrity, unity, and identity of the local government.
The group described the nomination as “totally unacceptable,” alleging that it disregards qualified sons and daughters of Akamkpa who have labored for the growth and stability of the party at the grassroots level. They further warned that any attempt to impose a candidate without proper consultation could create internal division and weaken the party’s chances in future elections.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the youth leaders stated that Akamkpa is not for sale and that leadership positions within the local chapter must reflect the will and interest of the people. He called on party stakeholders and elders to reconsider the decision and allow a transparent and inclusive process that respects the rights of bona fide indigenes.
The protesting youths also appealed to the state leadership of the APC to intervene swiftly to prevent escalation of tensions. They maintained that their agitation is peaceful but resolute, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the political future of Akamkpa.
As of the time of filing this report, party officials have yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
Observers note that how the situation is handled in the coming days may significantly impact party cohesion in Akamkpa and beyond.

PETITION FROM CONCERNED YOUTHS OF AKAMKPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
AGAINST THE ALLEGED IMPOSITION OF APC CHAIRMANSHIP CANDIDATE IN AKAMKPA LGA

Date: 20th FEB. 2026

To:
The State Chairman,
All Progressives Congress (APC)
State Secretariat.
Calabar cross river state

Subject: Strong Objection to the Alleged Imposition of a Non-Indigene. ABANDEGO ETE- FIA. as APC Chairman in Akamkpa LGA

We, the Concerned Youths of Akamkpa Local Government Area, write to formally register our deep dissatisfaction and strong objection to the alleged plans by some elders and stakeholders to impose a candidate for the position of APC Chairman in Akamkpa LGA without due consultation and against the collective will of the people.

It has come to our attention that the said aspirant being projected for this sensitive position is not an indigene of Akamkpa Local Government Area but is reportedly from Akwa Ibom State. This development, if true, is not only unjust but also a direct affront to the political dignity, identity, and democratic rights of the people of Akamkpa.
Akamkpa is blessed with capable, qualified, loyal, and committed sons and daughters who have labored tirelessly for the growth and stability of the party at the grassroots level. To sideline these loyal party members in favor of an external candidate is to undermine years of sacrifice, dedication, and political investment by true party faithful within the LGA.

We firmly believe that:
1. The chairmanship position of a local government party structure should be occupied by a bona fide indigene who understands the peculiar challenges, culture, and political dynamics of Akamkpa.
2. Imposition of candidates weakens internal democracy and breeds resentment, division, and voter apathy.
3. Such actions could pose a serious threat to party unity and jeopardize the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
4. The youth population, which forms the backbone of grassroots mobilization, cannot be ignored or treated as irrelevant stakeholders.
We caution that any attempt to impose a candidate against the will of the majority may lead to internal crisis, loss of confidence, and possible protest votes in 2027. Democracy thrives on consultation, transparency, and fairness, not on backdoor arrangements or elite consensus that excludes the grassroots.

We therefore respectfully demand:
• Immediate suspension of any move to impose a candidate.
• Open consultation with ward executives, youth leaders, women groups, and critical stakeholders within Akamkpa.
• A transparent, free, and fair process that allows credible aspirants from Akamkpa LGA to contest for the chairmanship position.

We remain committed members and supporters of the party and have no intention of causing disaffection. However, we will not remain silent while the political future of our local government is compromised.

Akamkpa belongs to Akamkpa people.
Justice, fairness, and internal democracy must prevail.

Respectfully submitted,

Concerned Youths of Akamkpa LGA
