How to Draft a Full Umbrella Skirt (On Fold) – Easy Method with Inches & CM

Learn how to draft a beautiful full umbrella skirt using a simple on-fold method.
Start by folding your fabric twice to create a quarter circle. From the folded corner, measure your waist radius:
6 inches (15 cm) for a fitted waist.
Mark the radius from the corner and draw a smooth curve to form the waistline.
Next, measure the skirt length from that waist curve:
36 inches (91 cm) for a full-length skirt.
Mark this all around and draw the hem curve to create the flare. When opened, this will form a full circular (umbrella) skirt with a wide, elegant drape.
Key measurements (on fold):
Radius: 6 inches (15 cm)
Skirt length: 36 inches (91 cm)
Waist section width (on fold): 8 inches (20 cm)
Cut along your marked lines, then add a waistband or belt.
Elastic option: If you plan to use elastic at the waist, increase the waist radius to fit your hip measurement so the skirt can pass through easily. This will slightly increase the fullness at the waist and give a more gathered look.
This method works beautifully with cotton fabric, giving a soft, flowing flare that’s easy to sew and perfect for everyday or special outfits.
