Lewis Hamilton pays Mercedes tribute after 2017 F1 title successes

Lewis Hamilton has credited Mercedes' supreme reliability recordfor making the difference in their victorious championship battle with Ferrari in 2017.

The four-time world champions boast the best race-finishing record in the field with Valtteri Bottas retirement at the Spanish GP in May the only one the double title-winning W08 has suffered all year.

Hamilton is the only driver on the grid to finish every race and will become just the second world champion since 1963 to go through a title-winning campaign without a DNF if he finishes Sunday's season-ending Abu Dhabi GP.

Before flying out to the UAE, Hamilton joined Mercedes' management for celebrations at the team's main base in Brackley and engine facility in Brixworth.

The trip to the engine base followed Hamilton's charge through the field to fourth from the pit lane in Brazil, when he was armed with a new engine which he was able to push tothe limit.

"Where we normally run in our best mode I got to run in that a lot longer, basically," he toldSky Sports F1in Abu Dhabi.

"What it really showed is what HPP [Mercedes High Performance Powertrains] have done with our power unit. I was just visiting the guys just recently to say thank you to them.

"To have the consistency and reliability we've had this year has enabled us to be where we are. It's been the outlier of us alongside Ferrari, for example, and I'm massively grateful for that."

Lewis wants race-winning sign offHamilton himself has shown few signs of fallibility on track during hisfourth title-winning year but accepted fault for the crash in qualifying in Brazil two weeks ago which effectively cost him a shot at victory.

Fourth at Interlagos came two weeks after a ninth place in Mexico after contact with Sebastian Vettel on the first lap, although it did not stop him clinching the world crown.

But neither Hamilton nor Mercedes have gone more than two races without a win all season and the Englishman is determined to sign offfrom 2017 with a 10th victory of the year for him and 12th for the team.

"We could have won the last race fairly easily and it was solely my fault that we didn't do so," he said.

"The plan this weekend is to go backto our old performance hopefully, Austin kind of thing where we are solid weekend, that's our goal this weekend.

"To make sure we start on the right foot and continue all through practice. It's a lot easier said than done, but not impossible. The goal isto try and finish the season on a high.

"It's crazy because we won the title already but we're still in the season, we have got one race to go. It feels like it's been the longest year, but wedo want to make sure we end it the right way."

UEFA Champions League!!!!!!!

Who is through and who still has work to do???

Chelsea made it three English teams through to the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-0 win at Qarabag on Wednesday.

But their Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool still have work to do - they must avoid defeat in their final group games to progress.

Should they do so, England will have a record five teams in the knockout stage - with Manchester City and Tottenham already through.

Elsewhere, Paris St-Germain have set a goalscoring record for the group stage with a game to spare, while Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Besiktas and Real Madrid have also qualified.

Teams that finish third in their group will drop into the Europa League, while those who finish bottom are out of European competition entirely.

Here BBC Sport looks at who is through and who still has work to do, with one round of games remaining.

Those matches will take place on 5-6 December.

Group A

Manchester United : A point in their final game against CSKA Moscow at Old Traffordwill guarantee their progress to the knockout stage as group winners. Indeed the only way they will not go through is if they lose by more than six goals.

FC Basel : Can still qualify - or go out. Such is the situation in the group, they could lose their final game to Benfica and still go through - and could win and go out. If they win, a four- or five-goal win for CSKA would see them eliminated.

CSKA Moscow : Can still qualify - and can still go out. If they lose, they are out. A draw will be enough for them to go through if Basel lose, but a victory may not be enough if Basel also win.

Benfica : Already eliminated having lost theirfirst five group games.

Group B

Paris St-Germain : Guaranteed to top the group if they avoid defeat by Bayern Munichon 5 December.

Bayern Munich : Have qualified for the last 16, along with PSG. They will need to beat PSG by more than three goals to top the group.

Celtic : Will qualify for the Europa League if they avoid defeat by Anderlecht in their finalgame.

Anderlecht : To finish third they need to beat Celtic by a greater margin than the 3-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of the Scottish champions earlier in the group phase.

Group C

Chelsea : Have qualified for the last 16 and will definitely top the group if they beat Atletico Madrid in their final game.

Roma : Will guarantee a top-two finish with victory over Qarabag. If Roma win and Chelsea fail to do so, the Italian side will top the group.

Atletico Madrid : They must beat Chelsea to have any chance of finishing in the top two -then hope Roma fail to win. If Roma draw, Atletico will go through by virtue of their superior head-to-head record.

Qarabag : Will finish bottom of the group having failed to win any of their group games to date.

Group D

Barcelona : Have qualified for the last 16 and will top the group no matter what happens in their final game against SportingLisbon.

Juventus : Victory over Olympiakos will guarantee their place in the last 16.

Sporting Lisbon : Can still qualify - if they beat Barcelona and Juventus fail to win.

Olympiakos : Cannot even qualify for the Europa League after taking a single point from their opening five matches.

Group E

Liverpool : Will go through as group winners if they beat Spartak Moscow at Anfield in their final game. Will also qualify for the last16 with a draw.

Sevilla : Will definitely qualify with victory over Maribor and will go through with a draw if Spartak do not beat Liverpool. If Liverpool lose and Sevilla win, the Spanish side will top the group.

Spartak Moscow : Victory at Anfield would take them through but anything less will mean they drop into the Europa League.

Maribor : Will finish bottom of the group having collected two points from their first five games.

Group F

Manchester City : Through as group winners having won their first five matches, including an impressive 4-2 victory at Napoli.

Shakhtar Donetsk : Will go through as runners-up if they avoid defeat by Manchester City in their final match.

Napoli : Need to beat Feyenoord and hope City beat Shakhtar.

Feyenoord : Will finish bottom having lost all five of their matches to date.

Group G

Besiktas : Through as group winners.

Porto : Will be guaranteed second place if they beat Monaco in their final game.

RB Leipzig : Will finish second if they beat Besiktas and Porto fail to beat Monaco.

Monaco : Last season's semi-finalists are out of Europe having failed to win any of their first five matches.

Group H

Tottenham : Through as group winners in an impressive campaign including a win and a draw against defending champions Real Madrid.

Real Madrid : Qualify as runners-up.

Borussia Dortmund : A point in their final game against Real Madrid will guarantee them a place in the Europa League.

Apoel Nicosia : Will finish third if they avoid defeat by Tottenham and Dortmund lose at Real Madrid.

Victor Moses - the asylum-seeking orphan who conquered the Premier League

That Victor Moses had the perseverance to make a success of his Chelsea career despite being continually sent out on loan says a great deal about his character.Yet this determination pales into insignificance when compared to the biggest mountain he has had to climb.Moses was just 11 when he arrived in England as an asylum seeker after both his mother and father were killed during religious clashes in Nigeria in 2002.The 26-year-old was playing football in the streets when his parents lost their lives. Just a week later, his remaining family had cobbled together enough money to send him away from his homeland.

That is how a quiet, unassuming and non-English speaking African orphan found himself in south London and at the start of adramatic change in his fortunes."It was tough in the beginning - being suddenly thrown into a different culture and stuff like that," Moses told BBC Sport."As a young boy in a new country, you had to make new friends and that was really difficult. When I first came, I couldn't even speak the language."Having been placed with foster parents, Moses was sent to school in South Norwood, which was close to an asylum support and immigration centre in Croydon.

"When I started going to school, I started getting used to things, like the language," said Moses. "After that, I started adapting to school, friends and everything."It was really difficult to start with but I survived."More than just surviving, the player has thrived in his second home.Today Moses boastsPremier League,Europa League andAfrica Cup of Nationswinners' medals, and has also played in both the Champions League and World Cup.The first tentative steps on the road of this blossoming career were taken shortly after arriving in London. As is common in young Nigerians, Moses played football for fun and his enthusiasm and prowess on the pitch soon led to him catching the attentionsof Cosmos 90 FC, a team which played in a nearby youth league."At 13 it was my first contact with organisedfootball and when they saw the way I was playing with the other kids and around the park, they knew I had talent," said Moses. The Sunday League side had been struggling at the time but Moses' arrival soon turned the club's fortunes around and word rapidly spread about the dazzling African talent playing on the pitches of south London. Hundreds started watching Cosmos' games."It was Cosmos who actually told Crystal Palace about me," added Moses. "Palace came to have a look, liked what they saw and they took it from there."Impressing on trial, Moses signed a schoolboy contract with the south London club.

Palace then placed the teenager in one of Croydon's best private schools,Whitgift, giving him access to superb tuition, facilities and an environment in which he could move on from his past at his own pace."Coming from where I was coming from, it was a different ball game," he recalled."Obviously the accent was a bit different from the way we spoke in Croydon but it was good to experience what private school was about."The treatment there was good, the education amazing. I was very happy that Palace gave me the opportunity to go to a school like that. I really enjoyed my time there."On the football pitch his extraordinary goalscoring exploits for the school led them to the English Schools Under-14 Cup final where Moses scored allfive goals in the final. In what now seems like fateful coincidence, Whitgift's football coach was a Chelsea legend, the formerdefender Colin Pates."He was a good man, and I always like beingaround him," said Moses. "He always encourages me every time he sees me and he always believed in me when we used to play school games.""He encouraged me to do the best I can to become a professional footballer. At that time I was very young but when older peoplelike that are giving advice, you have to take it.

"The most important thing that he always said to me is: 'You've got to work hard as a footballer. Talent alone won't take you there, hard work is what is going to help you'."The Nigerian is grateful for the advice from such an experienced individual so early on in his career. Now the demands of notorioustaskmaster Antonio Conte will shape the next phase of Moses' long and winding roadto the top.Prior to Conte's arrival at Chelsea in July 2016, only Rafa Benitez had given Moses anything like a chance at the Blues following his signing from Wigan Athletic in 2012.After Benitez's exit, Jose Mourinho, who took charge in 2013, didn't have a place for Moses in his team and sent him away on consecutive season-long loans toLiverpool,StokeandWest Ham.Yet Contesaw something in the Nigerianthat no one else had spotted, not even Moses himself."I've never played that (wing-back) position before," says Moses. "When the manager came in, he talked me through it and then put me there."It was good to have the manager's support, and he backed me and gave me the confidence to go out there and express myself. So I just wanted to go out there to play for him, the fans and the football club. Ididn't let him down."

Moses was thrust into Chelsea's starting line-up for the first time in three years, at Hull in the league in October 2016. He adapted to the unfamiliar role so well that not only was he namedman-of-the-match, but his performance kicked started a run of 22 Premier League appearances in a row (halted only briefly when injury struck in April).Rory Jennings, of CFC Fan TV, is under no illusions about the significance of Moses' development at wing-back."Moses played a huge role in Chelsea's success last season," he told BBC Sport."His brilliance allowed us to amend our formation and play a system that nobody else in the Premier League could cope with."Moses calls winning the title one of the happiest days in his life. He has also celebratedWorld Cup qualificationthis year with Nigeria, the country he opted to represent despite having played extensively for England at youth level. With a growing trophy haul, regular football and ever-increasing respect, Moses has overcome both personal heartbreak and repeated professional setbacks to finally reach the top.Surely few would begrudge him such success.

Alvaro Morata the elephant in the room at Real Madrid, says Terry Gibson

Alvaro Morata is the "elephant in theroom" and solution to Real Madrid's continual struggles in front of goal this season, according to Sky Sports' La Liga expert Terry Gibson.Zinedine Zidane's side drew a blank in the Madrid derby against Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night to slip 10 points behind leaders Barcelona.Meanwhile, Morata's goal and assistfor Chelsea in the 4-0 win over West Brom means that he has been involved in 12 goals in his first 11 Premier League games - a record by any Chelsea player in the competition's history."Morata is the elephant in the room for Real Madrid," Gibson said on the La Liga Weekly podcast. "He's five years younger than (Karim) Benzema, was in better form last season and should've got more games.Cristiano Ronaldo fired another blank in La Liga against Atletico Madrid"(Cristiano) Ronaldo is 32, so they'll have to be in the market soon for another centre forward. There's a lack of movement from the front pair, and most of Ronaldo's goals in the last couple of season have been one-touch finishes."At the moment it doesn't seem to besuiting him with his back to goal. All the goals he scored, he was the finalpiece of the jigsaw, supplied service by a fantastic pass."His finishing is very direct and reliant on power as the last part of the puzzle. I just wonder now if he's not entirely comfortable with his back to goal, and whether it might be an idea to put him back onto the left and change the system slightly.

"He's not getting those opportunitiesat the moment, so there needs to be a change of style from Real Madrid. Whether Zidane will change it or not,I don't think so.The defending champions will turn their attention to seeking a morale-boosting performance and result in the Champions League against Apoel Nicosia on Tuesday night. The return of Gareth Bale will provide a timely boost for Madrid, with the club adamant that the forward will remain at the Santiago Bernabeu next summer amid speculation of a return to the Premier League.Spanish Football Expert Guillem Balague played down suggestions that Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski would be targeted lastmonth, but the recent blip in form could lead to a change in stance among the club hierarchy.

Zinedine Zidane has continued to keep faith in his countryman Karim Benzema

When asked if Madrid need to sign aworld class striker, he said: "The plan is to wait. On Bale, he doesn't want to leave, thinks he'll be better when he comes back, and he's been told by the club there's no intention to sell him next summer."Ronaldo said before the international break, 'I want to leave, let me go', but Florentino Perez said to him, 'no offer came for you last summer, and you have a £1billion buy-out clause', so he won't be leaving."It'll have to be Benzema (who is sold). But there's not a number nine that suits Ronaldo. Harry Kane says he wants to stay at Spurs. Another player they are looking at is (Eden) Hazard, but that could affect Isco. So they should get Morata back."
